Job Summary
This position is dedicated to delivering both professional and non-professional nursing care services as per physician directives. The role encompasses various Clinical Nurse responsibilities, including assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care needs of assigned patients or executing nursing care and clinical support tasks within the defined scope of practice to fulfill the patient’s care plan. A valid nursing license is required. This is a professional role that may involve overseeing the work of junior professionals or managing specific processes and programs. The majority of the time will be spent on designing, implementing, or delivering processes, programs, and policies, utilizing specialized knowledge and skills typically gained through advanced education. This experienced-level position applies practical knowledge acquired through education and work experience, functioning independently with general supervision. Challenges faced are generally difficult but not overly complex, and the role may influence others by clarifying facts, policies, and practices.
Position Overview
This role requires the application of skills and knowledge essential for managing patient care from admission to discharge. It involves acting as an advocate for patients and their families while fostering a collaborative environment among all healthcare providers. Responsibilities include planning, delivering, and managing patient- and family-centered care through the nursing process, adhering to nursing practice standards grounded in research and evidence-based practices. The position emphasizes clinical excellence, which nurtures an environment focused on patient and family-centered care.
Job Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications:
- Active Massachusetts RN Licensure.
- Two (2) years of clinical nursing experience.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Three (3) years of clinical nursing experience.
- Department-specific certifications relevant to the type of patient care provided.
Duties and Responsibilities: The following duties are intended to outline the general nature of the work and are not exhaustive. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
- Conducts nursing activities that foster a compassionate, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients and staff, aimed at promoting comfort and healing while preventing unnecessary suffering. This includes vigilance, engagement, and responsiveness from caregivers, including family and healthcare personnel.
- Respects the dignity and privacy of patients and families in all interactions, establishing and maintaining mutual trust within the nurse-patient/family relationship.
- Assesses and identifies expected patient outcomes based on diagnoses, data, and patient concerns.
- Listens to and acknowledges the knowledge patients and families have about themselves, engaging them in their care. Identifies cultural needs (e.g., language) to develop a care plan that enhances the healthcare experience. Supports patient and family rights by facilitating informed decisions and advanced directives.
- Creates and implements individualized, outcomes-based care plans that consider the readiness and barriers to learning of patients and families. Provides and coordinates necessary health education for individuals, families, and groups to maintain optimal health.
- Utilizes evidence-based interventions and treatments tailored to specific diagnoses or problems.
- Documents all aspects of care in accordance with hospital and regulatory policies, including treatments performed and patient responses. Records any modifications to the care plan.
- Executes procedures and treatments using nursing knowledge and judgment, adhering to established guidelines and professional standards.
- Safely administers medications and assesses patient responses, applying knowledge of pharmacology and hospital standards of care.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of planned strategies based on patient responses and the achievement of expected outcomes.
- Develops, communicates, and coordinates a comprehensive discharge plan, utilizing appropriate resources and referrals to ensure a smooth transition for patients and their families.
- Creates a thorough educational plan for patients and families, using suitable resources and documenting according to departmental standards.
- Engages in patient safety, quality improvement, and process enhancement activities to support and improve patient outcomes, which may involve data collection and analysis.
- Demonstrates leadership at the bedside as a delegator, collaborator, facilitator, and communicator.
- Maintains positive working relationships with peers and colleagues to foster a professional work environment.
- Collaborates with nursing colleagues and other disciplines to implement care plans by participating in nursing, physician, and case management reporting rounds.
- Delegates responsibilities to others, considering their roles, knowledge, and capabilities.
- Treats both internal and external customers with courtesy, respect, and compassion, acknowledging cultural differences among staff and patients.
- Engages in lifelong learning activities to develop and maintain competence, enhance professional practice, and support career goals.
- Incorporates new knowledge and strategies to initiate changes in nursing care practices.
- May take on charge nurse responsibilities in collaboration with unit leadership.

Physical Requirements:
- Occasional lifting of 30-35 lbs and turning patients.
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
- Exposure to infectious diseases and potential carcinogenic chemicals.
- Exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
- Requires fine manual dexterity for lifting and maneuvering patients.
- Requires visual and auditory acuity to monitor patient care.

- Knowledge and application of the nursing process.
- Ability to provide care for a designated group of patients in accordance with unit guidelines and hospital policies.
