Institute for Public Knowledge Global Water Economics Research Assistant Water Economics and Beyond For the first time in human history, the hydrological cycle is out of balance, undermining an equitable and sustainable future for all. The cycle involves blue water (liquid water in rivers, lakes, aquifers) and green water (moisture in soils and plants). Disruptions caused by climate change, land use change, and inadequate water management threaten water availability, ecosystems, and global stability. The degradation of freshwater ecosystems contributes to climate change and biodiversity loss, leading to severe droughts, floods, and wildfires. These changes impact human security, food production, and increase inequalities, conflicts, and migration. Economically, water cycle disruptions threaten global GDP, with high-income countries potentially shrinking by 8% and lower-income countries by 10-15% by 2050. Position: Research Assistant for Global Water Economics The part-time Research Assistant will support the Executive Director of GCEW, Henk Ovink, from February 2025 to August 2025, assisting with dissemination, research, policy development, and strategic planning related to water economics and governance. Key Responsibilities: Support dissemination of GCEW work Monitor and ensure quality of research products Assist in developing policy papers on land use, desertification, wetlands, glaciers, and finance Contribute to planning for the UN 2026 and 2028 Water Conferences Provide research, policy recommendations, and strategic advice for UN Water Agenda Draft research programs and structure the Water Cycle Diplomacy narrative Required Skills and Experience: 3-5 years relevant work experience Interest in governance, economics, and policy on environmental, justice, climate, and water issues Research experience in environmental economics Strong writing skills beyond academic papers Creative, innovative, well-organized, ambitious Ability to work 10-15 hours/week until August 31, 2025 Pay range: $28-$32 per hour.
