Supervising Attorney, Victim Services

Job Title:Supervising Attorney Department:Victim Services Reports To:Sr. Manager of Victim Services Supervises:Attorneys and Paralegals FLSA Status:Exempt Pay Grade:E6 Job Type:Regular, Full-Time AKBCU: NoICPA: No General Functions: The Supervising Attorney provides comprehensive legal services and supervises a team of attorneys and paralegals delivering legal representation to Alaska Native and American Indian victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, stalking, and other crimes. This position primarily represents victims as clients in proceedings related to protective orders and family law matters. Working in partnership with our people, the Supervising Attorney helps develop opportunities that fulfill our endless potential by advocating for victims of crime. The role requires exceptional leadership, commitment to race equity work, and the ability to communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations while managing complex legal matters in both rural and urban settings. Duties and Responsibilities: Supervise and mentor attorneys and paralegals, providing guidance on case strategy, legal analysis, and professional development. Represent clients in court through the resolution of their cases, including at trial when necessary, ensuring high-quality legal advocacy. Draft, review, and revise complex legal documents, including pleadings for individuals in family law matters. Provide legal review of cases and pleadings with complex legal implications, including sensitive correspondence, contracts, notices, and memoranda of agreement. Oversee the legal work product of paralegals to ensure accuracy, quality, and compliance with professional standards. Mentor staff attorneys and other Victim Services staff in their practice areas, providing guidance on complex legal issues. Provide training to individual clients who are survivors of crime and relevant legal topics. Ensure appropriate grant administration including planning, data collection, progress monitoring, reporting, and staff coordination to meet all funder requirements. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with tribal leadership, court personnel, and other stakeholders. Participate in strategic planning for significant legal cases and organizational expansion efforts. Maintain confidential client files in accordance with professional ethics and organizational policies. Foster positive working relationships with Victim Services staff and cultivate a collaborative team environment. Attend conferences and workshops to maintain professional development and legal expertise. Travel to rural and urban areas as required to serve clients and support program delivery. Perform special projects and all related duties as needed and assigned. Job Specifications: Excellent organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to write reports, prepare training presentations, correspondence, and effectively present information to groups and community partners. Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships across diverse stakeholder groups. Professional work ethic with sound judgment, flexibility, determination, and good humor. Comprehensive knowledge of and experience with protective orders and family law practices. Experience reading, interpreting, drafting, and revising legal documents, corporate policies, and procedures. Demonstrated adaptability to handle day-to-day work challenges confidently with willingness to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities. Ability to build relationships across differences, proactively work through conflict, and maintain team morale and performance. Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, legal case management software, and relevant computer programs. Competent in using Zoom, Teams, and other virtual meeting platforms. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community. Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values, Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills. Minimum Qualifications: Continued employment is contingent upon completion of satisfactory state and federal fingerprint criminal background check. Juris Doctor or equivalent degree. Active membership in the Alaska Bar Association. Seven (7) years of experience in the practice of law, including experience and knowledge in representing survivors of crime and/or representing Tribes. Five (5) years of progressive experience in management or supervisory roles. Experience working with victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating violence, and Alaska Native legal issues, and/or experience and knowledge in the Indian Child Welfare Act, Child in Need of Aid cases, ANCSA, and Native law. Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of tribal, state, and federal relations. Experience supervising staff and leading teams with ability to listen, guide, and support people to achieve common goals. Demonstrated commitment to race equity work and cross-cultural communication. Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. May require prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and consistently working on a computer with repetitive motion. The need to occasionally move around the office to access filing cabinets, storage cabinets, and office equipment may be necessary. Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
