About CADRE
Community Asset Development Re-defining Education (CADRE) is an independent, community-based, parent membership organization in South Los Angeles founded in 2001. CADRE is led by African American and Latino parents and caregivers whose children attend local schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). We work for systemic change by supporting grassroots South LA parents as leaders in stopping the pushout crisis in schools serving low-income neighborhoods of color.
Our mission is to solidify and advance parent leadership to ensure that all children are rightfully educated regardless of where they live. Through parent capacity building, political education, advocacy, and organizing, CADRE challenges schools beliefs and practices that criminalize children and parents and violate their human rights to a quality education, dignity, and participation in our public education system. We build power to win new policies and challenge existing ones as part of a movement toward educational and racial justice.
The Role
The Deputy Director is a senior leadership role responsible for strengthening CADREs internal alignment, organizational effectiveness, and execution of its mission and multi-year strategic plan. Reporting directly to the Executive Director (ED), the Deputy Director serves as a strategic partner and internal leader, ensuring that organizational strategy is translated into effective systems, programs, and people-centered practices. This role supports continuity of leadership, staff development, and cross-team coordination while centering care, accountability, and equityrooted in CADREs commitment to educational and racial justice.
Objectives of This Role
- Partner with the Executive Director in advancing CADREs mission, vision, and strategic plan
- Strengthen internal leadership, communication, and operational alignment across all teams
- Support implementation of annual organizational and programmatic priorities
- Foster a healthy, trauma-informed, and sustainable organizational culture
- Serve as a key link between field organizing, programs, operations, and executive leadership
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Evaluation
- Partner with the ED to lead and facilitate organizational strategic planning processes
- Conduct organizational needs assessments and develop multi-year planning priorities
- Design and maintain internal evaluation and outcome measurement systems to assess organizational impact, strengths, challenges, and planning priorities
- Prepare internal reports, dashboards, and updates for leadership and Board use
- Track benchmarks and support staff in developing work plans aligned to strategic goals
Organizational Development & Operations
- Refine and develop organizational structures, systems, and processes to support CADREs growth
- Strengthen coordination across programs, operations, and organizing team
- Serve as a thought partner to the Executive Director on strategy, systems, and organizational development
- Step in to support executive leadership functions as needed to ensure continuity
Personnel & Human Resources
- Review and refine internal HR practices to ensure continued alignment with fiscal sponsor policies and applicable employment law
- Review, refine, and develop staff job descriptions as needed to effectively support the evolving organizational structure
- Develop and maintain staff recruitment and selection processes and timelines
- Design and implement staff orientation, core training, and onboarding systems
- Design and oversee staff evaluation, ongoing support, and professional development mechanisms
- Develop supervision guidelines and support supervisory staff in building their management capacity
- Support collection of best practices in workplace conflict resolution and restorative approaches
Communications & Community Presence
- Support development of organizational communications including newsletters, promotional materials, and digital content
- Develop and maintain production schedules and distribution plans to maximize community awareness of CADRE
- Maintain visibility with staff, partners, and community as a representative of CADREs leadership
Fundraising & Resource Development
- Support grant reporting and funder communication as needed
- Identify opportunities to expand organizational partnerships and resource base
Volunteer & Community Engagement
- Identify and create meaningful volunteer and community leadership opportunities
- Develop volunteer recruitment materials and internal volunteer management guidelines
- Support integration of community members into organizational work
What Were looking for
Required
- 5+ years of nonprofit, organizing, or movement-based leadership and organizational management experience, specifically in program development, staff supervision, resource development, strategic planning, and evaluation
- Strong strategic thinking, facilitation, and people management skills
- Demonstrated experience supporting executive leadership and building organizational systems
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ease with multi-lingual communication environments
- Ability to assess, synthesize, and re-organize information for people with different learning styles and in different settings
- Demonstrated ability to work in multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-class settings
- Comfort working in community-based, grassroots environments with and for working-class communities
- Understanding of social, economic, and political factors surrounding public education and low-income neighborhoods
- Familiarity with community organizing strategies, tactics, and issue campaigns
- Commitment to racial, gender, and education justice
- Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and project management tools
Preferred
- Bilingual English/Spanish written and oral fluency strongly preferred
- Familiarity with local education reform landscape, LAUSD policy arena, and South LA community
- Experience with trauma-informed organizational practices
- Background in parent organizing or family engagement work
Work Location & Conditions
This position is based at CADREs offices at 8410 South Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90003. This leadership role is expected to maintain regular in-person visibility with staff, partners, and the community. The role requires occasional evening and weekend availability for community events, meetings, and organizational activities.
Compensation & Benefits
This is an exempt, full-time position. Salary is commensurate with experience and based on a comparable annual, full-time salary within the nonprofit sector.
The compensation package includes:
- Salary: $85,000$100,000 annually, commensurate with experience
