Job Description
Ophthalmic Technicians play a vital role in patient care by performing tests and measurements that assist ophthalmologists in diagnosing and treating patients. They ensure accurate documentation in patients' electronic and/or paper charts, manage doctors' daily schedules, and maintain a smooth patient flow in the office. Technicians also handle preoperative and postoperative instructions, triage phone messages, manage e-prescriptions, follow-up on prior authorizations, and document all relevant information in the patient's electronic chart.
In this role, it is expected that employees perform any tasks necessary to ensure patients are properly cared for. Some responsibilities may arise that are not specifically listed, but it is understood that completing such tasks is part of the job. Anything that benefits patient care and supports the clinic's efficiency is considered a responsibility of this position.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Workup and Testing
• Chart Preparation: Seat patients, open electronic charts, and begin a new exam
• Patient Data Collection: Document patient histories: Including chief complaints, medications, past ocular history, family/social history, and review of systems (ROS).
• Visual Assessments: Perform and document the following: visual acuity measurements, pupil evaluations, motility, Amsler grid, BAT results, and confrontation visual fields.
• Checking Eye Pressure: Using applanation primarily as well as I-care and tonopen when necessary
• Specialized Testing: Conduct imaging/testing such as Humphrey visual fields, OCT scans, corneal topography, meibomian gland imaging, and fundus photography. Then exporting results to patient charts.
• Refraction: Perform auto refractions and manual refractions using the phoropter
• Photography and Imaging: Assist with fluorescein angiography when applicable
• Contact Lenses: Perform over-refractions for contact lens exams and input contact lens prescriptions into the electronic system
• Minor Surgical Assistance: Prepare surgical trays, assist during in-office procedures, and clarify post-operative care for patients.
Administrative Duties
• Triage phone messages and follow up on patient communications.
• Ensure all exam rooms and equipment are sanitized, stocked, and functioning.
• Replenish and organize necessary handouts, instruction sheets, and supplies.
• Call and document no shows at the end of the day
Daily End of Day and Late-Afternoon Duties
• Close and sanitize exam rooms and ensure equipment is powered down and covered. (Slit lamps, OCT, Fundus, Topography)
• Make sure all prism tips on the applanators are in the upright position
• Make sure all items are cleared from the desks in the exam rooms
• Return and document all phone messages- All patients who call and leave a voicemail must receive a return call by the end of day.
• Prepare the next day's schedules and organize supplies at the technician station
• Secure the office at the end of the day by locking doors and shredding documents.
Note: Late night duties are performed on a rotating schedule and typically occur once per month.
Additional Expectations
• Perform any additional duties necessary to enhance patient care and ensure the clinic runs smoothly, going above and beyond as needed.
• Technicians are assigned to work with a specific physician on most days. However, it is expected that employees will be flexible and willing to work with any physician as needed.
• During downtime, assist wherever necessary to enhance clinic productivity and ensure smooth operations.
• Employees are required to travel to the secondary location in the Chamblee-Dunwoody area when staff coverage is needed.
• Work Saturdays when there is a physician in the office.
• Be flexible with office hours: while regular hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, seeing emergency patients on a walk-in basis may extend the workday beyond 5:00 PM.
• Maintain accurate inventory of supplies and notify the appropriate staff for reorders.
• Check expiration dates weekly of all eye drops and medical supplies in the office
• Prepare/wash surgical instruments for autoclaving and storage.
• Ensure the cleanliness and organization of assigned exam rooms.

• Certifications: CPR certification preferred but not required; JCAHPO certification is strongly encouraged.
Physical and Technical Requirements
• Ability to operate ophthalmic testing and imaging equipment.
• Capable of lifting, bending, and standing for extended periods.
This position requires adaptability, a commitment to patient care, and a proactive approach to supporting both patients and ophthalmologists.
