Location: Non-Bargaining Unit, 913 - North Shore General Overhead, Mount Sinai Hospital Description: Under general supervision of an ophthalmologist, works as a visual field technician during examination and treatment. Maintains a steady patient flow through clinic areas. May perform other basic or specialized vision measurements as requested. Completes all relevant clinical documentation and may assist ophthalmologists with research protocols. Provides technical assistance during patient care delivery. Responsibilities Assists attending ophthalmologists in patient examination by performing routine and specialized visual testing to ensure expeditious treatment of vision disorders. Uses technical measurement techniques including manifest and cycloplegic refraction, glare testing, keratometry, fundus photography, applanation and tonometry. Ensures smooth and efficient patient flow during inquiry, screening, enrollment, and medication pickup or dispensing under physician supervision. Completes appropriate medical documentation for patient testing. Maintains patient records and compiles patient data as required by institutional or regulatory protocols. Performs troubleshooting and maintenance of testing equipment, and maintains supplies for ophthalmic testing and practice operations. Assists in telephone answering and appointment scheduling as requested by Office Manager. Assists physician in performing minor surgery. Trains patients in insertion, removal and care of contact lenses. Performs other related duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED. Minimum knowledge ordinarily acquired through completion of a training program at a recognized ophthalmic medical assistant training facility. Desired prior work experience of six months in ophthalmic testing; new assistants require a 30‑day orientation period. Good analytical skills for handling ophthalmology patients during provision of patient services and appropriate assessment of correct action during testing. Good interpersonal manner to ensure harmonious provision of ophthalmological services. Manual dexterity and light lifting ability for use and maintenance of visual field and other testing equipment; basic physical strength for positioning patients and equipment.
