Special Services Teaching Assistant

Starting Date: Jul 27, 2026 Job Summary The job of the Special Services Teaching Assistant is to work with individual and/or small groups of students with disabilities under the supervision and direction of a certified staff member to supervise and instruct students, model necessary skills, model appropriate behaviors, follow educational and behavioral plans, provide health care needs, and support students across a variety of settings including the classroom, cafeteria, playground, school campus, and field trips. Essential Job Functions Implement, under supervision of an assigned teacher and/or professional staff, academic instructional programs and lesson plans (reading, math, language comprehension, writing, computer, etc.). Implement functional instructional programs (self‑esteem, behavior, daily living, organization, etc.). Carry over related services (occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, adapted physical education, hearing, and/or vision). Monitor and supervise students in a variety of settings (classrooms, restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading/unloading zones, cafeteria, assemblies, field trips, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment. Assist with lifting students and perform activities of daily living (toileting, feeding, cleaning, transferring, positioning). Assist in medical‑related duties (catheterization, gastrointestinal feedings, assisted breathing devices, colostomy, and ileostomy) as trained. Perform clerical tasks (adapt classroom activities, assignments/materials, make copies, file, design bulletin boards, use computer and necessary software) under the direction of the classroom teacher to support classroom objectives. Accurately document and assist with record keeping; communicate with teachers and district personnel regarding students’ needs and progress. Comply with school, district, state, and federal regulations and policies, maintain confidentiality, and follow safety rules for assistance. Attend required meetings, in‑services, and webinars. Additional Qualifications Preferred possession or willingness to obtain a CDL license. Community‑focused training: work directly with students in the community to develop job skills. Support students in building life skills (cooking, cleaning, shopping, laundry, budgeting). Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Must possess the ability to Develop and maintain an empathetic attitude toward students with disabilities. Develop effective relationships with students, parents, and staff while maintaining confidentiality. Work cooperatively with others in a positive manner. Perform multiple tasks and upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions. Perform basic math, read manuals, write documents in prescribed formats, and solve practical problems. Work with a diverse population of students and adults in a variety of circumstances professionally. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – Must be willing to Learn specialized instructional/management techniques. Obtain and maintain certifications for non‑violent crisis intervention, CPR, and first aid. Apply knowledge of child development and behavior stages. Education and/Experience Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school or GED. Teaching Assistants providing instructional support must meet one of the following: Complete at least two years of study at a higher‑education institution (60 college credits). Possess an Associate’s Degree or higher. Provide documentation of passing the Paraprofessional Exam. Physical Requirements Typical duties performed in school settings (classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium, recreational areas). Frequent walking, standing, sitting, stooping, lifting equipment, materials, or students. Lifting, movement, and transferring of students is required. Movement of students by wheelchairs and possible exposure to bodily fluids may occur. Daily personal close contact with students is required. Travel between schools or district office may be required. Terms of Employment 182 days per school year; Salary based on District Scale for Teacher Assistants. Job Requirements Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.
