Interim Chief Financial Officer

The Interim Chief Financial Officer will provide strategic and hands-on finance leadership during a critical leadership transition for a mission-driven nonprofit organization. This role oversees the finance function, ensures the accuracy and integrity of financial information, manages cash flow and forecasting, and supports the organization's executive leadership and board with timely, insightful financial reporting. The Interim CFO will stabilize operations, mentor existing staff, and implement short-term process improvements to maintain continuity and support informed decision-making.

Responsibilities:

• Provide interim executive leadership for the finance function during a leadership transition, ensuring continuity and stability.
• Oversee all accounting and finance activities, including general ledger, financial reporting, and financial analysis.
• Review the work of accounting and finance staff for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with internal policies and relevant regulations.
• Lead, mentor, and support the existing finance team, promoting professional development and a collaborative working environment.
• Manage cash flow to ensure the organization meets its financial obligations and maintains appropriate liquidity.
• Develop, refine, and monitor financial forecasts to support short-term planning and strategic decision-making.
• Oversee the preparation of timely and accurate financial reports for internal leadership and external stakeholders.
• Support and enhance financial planning and analysis processes to provide meaningful insights into organizational performance.
• Collaborate closely with executive leadership to align financial strategies with organizational goals and mission.
• Interact with state agencies as required, ensuring accurate reporting, compliance, and effective communication.
• Prepare and present financial information to the board, clearly explaining key trends, risks, and opportunities.
• Identify and drive short-term process improvements within finance and accounting to increase efficiency and strengthen controls.
• Ensure that financial management practices support the organization's nonprofit mission and funding requirements.
• Serve as a visible, hands-on leader who quickly assesses current operations and implements practical solutions.
• Work effectively in an onsite or hybrid capacity, maintaining strong communication with staff and leadership.

Essential Skills:

• Proven experience serving as a Chief Financial Officer or in a senior CFO-level leadership role.
• Previous experience in the nonprofit sector, with a strong understanding of nonprofit financial management requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and oversee accounting and finance staff in a hands-on, detail-oriented manner.
• Strong expertise in cash flow management, including monitoring, forecasting, and optimizing liquidity.
• Advanced skills in financial forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning and analysis.
• Extensive experience with financial reporting, including preparation and review of accurate and timely reports.
• Solid background in accounting principles and financial analysis within a complex organizational environment.
• Experience interacting with state agencies, including reporting, compliance, and communication.
• Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to guide and develop a finance team.
• Ability to present financial information clearly and confidently to senior leadership and board members.
• Comfort working in a fast-paced transition environment and quickly assessing existing processes and systems.
• Availability to begin the assignment on an immediate or near-immediate basis.
• Comfortable working onsite with flexibility to operate in a hybrid arrangement as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications:

• Former CFO experience is preferred and highly valued.
• Board presentation experience is preferred, including communicating complex financial information to non-financial audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to implement short-term process improvements in finance and accounting functions.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust across departments and with external stakeholders.
• Proven ability to operate as a hands-on leader who can both set strategy and dive into day-to-day details.
• Experience working in a mission-driven environment and aligning financial decisions with organizational values.

Work Environment:

The role is based within a collaborative nonprofit environment, where the Interim Chief Financial Officer will lead an established finance team and work closely with executive leadership. The organization values open communication, partnership, and a shared commitment to its mission. The position is primarily onsite, with flexibility for a hybrid work arrangement when appropriate. The Interim CFO will operate in a professional office setting, using standard office technologies and financial systems to support daily operations, reporting, and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

Job Type & Location:

This is a Contract position based out of Waterbury, CT.

Pay and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $70.00 - $90.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
