Header Welder

Header welders are responsible for preparing and welding pipe connections and components onto headers used in the assembly of heat exchange coils. This role includes threading various pipe materials, welding connections to headers, and fabricating distributor tubes and header stubs in accordance with engineering specifications and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Safety & Housekeeping: Maintain a safe and clean working environment by following all procedures, rules, and regulations. Care for tools, welding equipment, and machinery; notify maintenance of any equipment issues or safety concerns. Clean work area as required and maintain housekeeping standards at all times.
• Fabrication & Welding: Thread MPT, Victaulic, steel, and brass pipe to prepare connections for header assemblies. Weld threaded pipe connections onto headers returned for completion, ensuring proper fit and alignment. Fabricate and install distributor tubes and header stubs according to job specifications. Fabricate headers and distributor assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings and work instructions. Perform soldering and welding operations required for header and distributor assembly.
• Technical Reading & Measurement: Read and interpret engineering drawings, bills of material, and written work instructions. Measure components accurately using a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch to ensure proper fabrication.
• Quality & Productivity: Inspect completed work to verify quality, weld integrity, and compliance with specifications. Follow manufacturing instructions and complete job assignments accurately and on time. Work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining productivity and quality standard.
• Teamwork & Collaboration: Contribute to team efforts by working cooperatively with others and supporting related functions as needed. Maintain positive working relationships and communicate effectively with coworkers, leads, and supervisors.
• Administrative & Compliance: Accurately charge time in the time and attendance system to ensure proper labor distribution and payroll accuracy. Utilize IFS system for daily operations, including logging in, reviewing assigned work, and maintaining accurate records. Complete and clear IFS shop orders in a timely and accurate manner to support production tracking and reporting. Participate in and complete required IFS training to ensure proper system usage and compliance. Comply with all government regulations, laws, company policies, and procedures. Attend work as scheduled, arrive on time, and work overtime as required to meet production demands.
• Other Duties: Complete additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor as needed.

Desired Qualifications:

• Education & Experience: High school diploma or equivalent preferred to support continued advancement. Ability to understand and follow directions from supervisors.
• Skills & Abilities: Ability to read and comprehend technical drawings and written instructions. Basic mathematical skills. Effective communication and listening skills. Ability to monitor and assess work quality and make adjustments as needed. Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
• Certificates, Licenses, or Training: On-the-job training provided.

Level / Grade Structure:

• Level 1 Beginning: Meets minimum quality standards; requires additional time to complete work.
• Level 2 Proficient: Meets quality standards and completes work within estimated time.
• Level 3 Advanced: Meets quality standards, completes work faster than estimated, and is capable of welding steel to copper.

Interaction with Others: Reports to the Coil Shop Supervisor. Must be able to accurately receive, understand, and follow instructions from the supervisor or lead. This role requires consistent cooperation with coworkers and a willingness to ask questions and provide assistance as needed to support team success.

Working Environment: Work is performed in an industrial production environment for a manufacturer of refrigeration and HVAC equipment. The employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and vehicles. Noise levels may be high in certain areas, and temperatures can vary seasonally. The role may involve pressure related to production deadlines, quality standards, and fluctuating workloads.
