Responsibilities The Charge Nurse serves as a key member of the unit-based leadership team and manages patient-centered care coordination during designated shifts. Directs, monitors, and evaluates nursing care according to established policies and procedures; provides resource support for staff and models commitment to the hospital’s vision, mission, and values. Supervises personnel providing direct patient care, delegates activities based on patient care needs, exercises judgement regarding assignments using policies, and assesses staff competency. Assists with operationalizing evidence-based practices to enhance patient safety and quality outcomes, supports internal and external benchmarks, accreditations, and designations. Ensures compliance with all policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, and that equipment is functioning properly. Assists with admission and discharge processes to ensure efficient throughput and high-quality patient-centered care. Participates in ongoing assessment of the quality of patient care services in the unit, collaborating with other management team members. Engages in service recovery when necessary, provides direct and ongoing supervision of staff with regard to conflict resolution and personnel policy compliance. Leads in a way that inspires commitment to the organization’s vision, mission, and values; resolves grievances according to procedures. Supports engagement initiatives such as employee rounding, hourly rounds, and other initiatives. Provides direction, supervision, and guidance to staff; delivers coaching and feedback where appropriate; facilitates training to improve performance and engagement. Provides recommendations related to interviewing, selecting, and training new staff and implements courses of action to maintain a competitively superior organization. Represents the organization positively within the community; participates in community/patient events and in-services. Assists with staff scheduling, inventory control, supplies and equipment management. Ensures compliance with safety regulations, emergency procedures, medication administration, infection control, ethics, compliance, risk management, universal precautions, body mechanics, and use of safety equipment. Ensures staff knowledge of National Safety Patient Goals and adherence to policies and procedures; reviews issues daily and follows through in correcting situations. Ensures equipment is working properly and adequate supplies are available and utilized safely; maintains a safe environment free of clutter in patient rooms and halls. Ensures staff practices all fire drills responsibly. Other duties as assigned. Education Associate in Science Degree required. Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing preferred. Licensure and Certification Current, clear, unencumbered nurse licensure in the State of Louisiana or Compact Nurse License required. Work Shift Days (United States of America). Other Requirements Strong nurse-provider collaboration with surgeons, pharmacy, and respiratory therapy. 2:1 Patient to Nurse Ratio overall; 1:1 Patient to Nurse Ratio based on patient acuity.
