Entry-Level Research Engineer

The Entry-Level Research Engineer supports the development and testing of roll roofing materials, including polymer-modified asphalt systems. This role involves hands-on laboratory work, assisting in compounding materials with polymers and hot asphalt, conducting routine tests, and preparing technical reports. The position is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career engineer looking to build experience in materials research, product development, and industrial testing.

• Assist in the formulation and preparation of roll roofing materials using polymers, hot asphalt, and additives. Support compounding activities under the guidance of senior engineers or scientists. Follow established procedures to ensure safe and consistent material processing.

• Perform routine physical and mechanical testing on roofing samples (e.g., tensile strength, elongation, softening point). Assist with durability and environmental testing such as heat aging, accelerated exposure, and weathering. Accurately record test results and observations.

• Compile and organize experimental data for review.

• Safety oriented culture with 5S focus. Laboratory with exposure to hot materials and industrial equipment, opportunity to visit production facility for prototype trials. Requires adherence to safety procedures and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

• Relevant experience (internships, co-ops, or academic lab work acceptable). Exposure to materials testing or laboratory work is preferred.

• Basic understanding of materials science, polymers, or asphalt/bitumen (coursework acceptable). Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment and testing methods. Ability to collect, record, and organize data accurately. Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and report writing.

• Strong attention to detail and willingness to learn. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to follow instructions and work both independently and in a team environment. Problem-solving mindset with curiosity about materials and processes.

• Internship or coursework related to polymers, asphalt materials, or construction products. Familiarity with ASTM or similar testing standards. Interest in materials development or industrial research.

• Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, or a related field.
