Construction Accountant

Specialty Systems Inc. is a growing metal panel manufacturer and installer specializing in architectural metal systems and components (including composite panels, aluminum plate, column covers, insulated systems, sheet metal, standing seam, and custom solutions). We serve design and construction professionals and are a roughly $15M annual revenue company experiencing continued growth. We are seeking a detail-oriented Construction Accountant to join our team and support accurate financial management of our manufacturing and installation projects. Position Overview: The Construction Accountant will manage the full cycle of project-based accounting for manufacturing and installation work. This role focuses on job costing, financial reporting, accounts payable/receivable, billing, and collaboration with project managers and operations to ensure projects stay on budget and financial records remain accurate and compliant. Key Responsibilities: Perform job costing for manufacturing and installation projects, accurately allocating and tracking costs for materials, labor, subcontractors, equipment, and overhead. Collaborate with project managers and estimators to input project budgets, monitor actual vs. budget performance, analyze variances, and support cost control and forecasting. Process and code accounts payable invoices to the correct jobs/projects; manage vendor and subcontractor payments, including retention/retainage where applicable. Handle accounts receivable, progress billing, customer invoices, and collections; prepare and process payment applications. Maintain work-in-progress (WIP) schedules, revenue recognition (percentage-of-completion or completed-contract methods as appropriate), change order tracking, and project close-out accounting. Assist with month-end close processes, prepare financial statements, reconciliations (bank, GL, job cost), and management reports. Support cash flow monitoring, payroll cost allocation to jobs, and compliance with company policies, GAAP, and relevant construction/manufacturing regulations. Improve accounting processes and systems; assist with audits and special projects as needed. Work closely with operations, project management, and other departments to ensure timely and accurate financial data. Qualifications: 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction, manufacturing, or project-based/job-cost accounting. Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, progress billing, change orders, and construction/manufacturing financial practices. Proficiency with accounting software (QuickBooks, Foundation, or similar construction ERP systems preferred) and Microsoft Excel (advanced skills a plus). Ability to communicate effectively with project managers, vendors, and internal teams. Experience in a mid-sized growing company is a plus. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Experience in metal fabrication, architectural products, construction contracting, or manufacturing environments. Familiarity with construction-specific software or tools.
