Chemistry Laboratory Manager

Position Overview Manage lab operations for assigned courses and research (40% of time). Duties include purchasing materials, maintaining laboratories, and ensuring safety in partnership with faculty. Responsibilities Purchase materials, chemicals, and equipment for general chemistry, biochemistry, and other identified courses in partnership with faculty. Maintain assigned lab rooms clean, organized, and safe in consultation with faculty. Work closely with faculty to develop and implement laboratory procedures and setups. Oversee preparation of reagents, equipment, and experiments for assigned courses. Distribute lab materials and set up equipment per course needs. Respond to immediate lab needs such as emergencies, chemical spills, contamination, equipment malfunctions, and procedural issues. Clean up and reset teaching labs for the assigned courses. Keep detailed records of stockroom activities and troubleshoot solutions. Collaborate with faculty and the other Lab Manager to support undergraduate research needs. Serve as a member of the General Chemistry Committee. Maintain inventory of chemicals and supplies in assigned lab spaces. Loan, track, and maintain shared PPE, including laundering lab coats and cleaning goggles. Teaching Responsibilities (20%) Teach one section of general chemistry laboratory (CHEM 1501 or CHEM 1511) per quarter. Laboratory sections meet one day per week for approximately 3.5 hours. Collaborate with other faculty to execute teaching duties and demonstrate commitment to teaching excellence. Manage Student Workers (25%) Supervise and coordinate a team of student workers addressing lab needs such as reagent preparation, class prep, and glassware stocks. Provide lab safety training, solution preparation, labeling procedures, and course support. Initiate and oversee hiring process for student workers as needed. Assign tasks based on training and skill level. Train students to test new experimental procedures for classes. Safety & Waste Management (5%) Conduct annual inspections of teaching labs, prep rooms, and stockrooms with the Academic Safety Officer (ASO). Perform hazard assessments and create SOPs. Implement the Chemical Hygiene Plan and assist faculty in research labs. Ensure safe lab behaviors of student workers and manage PPE supply. Maintain electronic safety records of trainings and inspections. Participate as a member of the Sinegal Building Safety Committee and Departmental Safety Committee. Collect biohazard and hazardous chemical waste and assist research students in waste handling. Collaborate with safety committees to improve safety and implement changes. Assist Lab Staff (5%) Develop strategies to maintain stockrooms and prep rooms clean, organized, and safe. Collaborate with other staff to maintain accurate records of lab purchases and create budget reports. Work with Lab Manager, Storeroom, Hazardous Materials, and Instrument Manager to keep instructional equipment in good working order. Other (5%) Provide guidance to department management to ensure laboratories align with department goals. Assist research groups with reagent preparation, equipment distribution, and hazardous reagent handling. Perform related duties such as preparing labs, glassware, equipment, and training teachers for supplementary programs. Support department chair with budgetary reports as needed. Qualifications Master's degree in chemistry or related area with coursework in general, organic chemistry, and quantitative analysis; or Associate’s degree with coursework in general, organic chemistry and at least 2 years of laboratory experience. Laboratory safety training. Knowledge of fundamental chemical principles, handling, storage, transport of chemicals, and waste disposal regulations. Proficiency with laboratory equipment, LIMS, and preparation of solutions with or without a fume hood. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently, set deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities. Strong initiative, independent work, and teamwork ability. Strong interpersonal skills for communication with faculty, students, staff, and vendors. Demonstrated commitment to the University’s mission, vision, and values. Preferred Qualifications PhD degree in chemistry or related field. 3+ years of experience conducting chemistry laboratory preparation and supervision, preferably in academia. Formal coursework or training in Laboratory Safety. Knowledge of chemical and biological waste management, OSH regulations, EPA, and other safety guidelines. Experience with institutional biosafety committees, IACUCs, and analytical instrumentation. Experience with inventory management software (LIMS) for labs and chemical stockrooms.
