Division of Plant Science & Technology

The Division of Plant Science & Technology is seeking a Research Consultant II to support an innovative research program focused on developing genetic resources and gene drive technologies for the management of the invasive spotted lanternfly. This position offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of computational biology, molecular genetics, and applied entomology in collaboration with the USDA and other research partners.

Position Summary

The Research Consultant II will use computational, genetic, and molecular biology techniques to help create genetic resources supporting the development of gene drives for spotted lanternfly control. This position works closely with University of Missouri and USDA collaborators and does not supervise student or staff employees.

Key Responsibilities

Analyze genetic sequencing and molecular biology data related to genetic editing of spotted lanternflies and their symbionts using artificial intelligence, computational biology, and advanced statistical methods (40%).

Publish scientific manuscripts and prepare reports for submission to the USDA based on research findings and project outcomes (25%).

Conduct molecular and genomic experimentation, including PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, electrophoresis, RNA interference assays, and other standard molecular and genetic procedures (20%).

Present research findings at USDA meetings and professional conferences, including scientific society meetings such as the Entomological Society of America Annual Meeting (5%).

Maintain spotted lanternfly and Tree of Heaven colonies within a USDA APHIS-certified quarantine facility while following all permitting and training requirements (5%).

Perform other job-related duties as assigned

Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, and at least 4 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

PhD in Biology or related field

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $60,944.00 - $77,000.00 annually.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
