Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

• United States citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
• Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
• Degree obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
• Residency training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Accepted residencies include those approved by ACGME or AOA or one year of post‑medical school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑US residency programs followed by at least three years of independent practice in the United States.
• Residents enrolled in accredited programs and eligible for appointment as physician‑resident providers (PRPs) can be appointed as PRPs under restricted duties.
• PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may be appointed on an intermittent basis, and are not considered independent practitioners.
• Proficiency in spoken and written English.
• Preferred experience includes board certification.
• Physical requirements: meet physical standards for the position, include a physical examination prior to placement, required drug testing and random testing, lifting 15–44 pounds, and other specified physical activities.

Duties

• Provide comprehensive assessment, diagnostic work‑up, and clinic intervention for Veterans in the Primary Care team setting.
• Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to accomplish patient, service, and medical center goals, promoting the Patient Aligned Care Team model.
• Distinguish between normal and abnormal findings to establish diagnoses and initiate appropriate responses to emergency health problems.
• Order and evaluate diagnostic tests, recommend treatment and/or referral, and initiate medication orders.
• Follow performance measure guidelines and maintain ethical standards.
• Assist with continuity of care across the VHA system and provide on‑site leadership to ensure timely care.
• Participate in quality improvement activities and medical center committees.

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student‑loan repayment program.
