Job Description

JOB TITLE: Assistant Principal

REPORTS TO: Principal

OBJECTIVE: To serve as the assistant instructional and administrative leader of the school by working with staff, students, parents, and community under the direction of the principal. To work to establish a high quality educational environment that accomplishes the school's mission.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Ability to meet any applicable certification requirements under state law for the position within the timelines as established by the State Department of Education.
2. Ability to meet the suitability criteria for employment under Alabama law (i.e. Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457).
3. Ability to plan and organize effectively.
4. Effective oral and written communication skills.
5. Ability to evaluate the work of others.
6. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance.
7. Physical strength, mobility, dexterity, stamina, and acuity to perform job responsibilities.
8. Ability to provide own transportation to perform duties and responsibilities.
9. Possession of valid driver's license.
10. Ability to use current technology to perform duties and responsibilities.
11. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may require

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities.
2. Works closely with the Principal and staff members to ensure the smooth overall operation of the school.
3. Assists in establishing and maintaining a positive and safe learning environment for students and staff.
4. Oversees assigned responsibilities within the school, which may include, but be not be limited to, student discipline, scheduling, personnel management, instructional and/or extracurricular activities, handling logistical matters, and/or professional development activities.
5. Assists the principal with personnel matters.
6. Assists with efforts to improve student attendance.
7. Works with principal and office staff to maintain records of all truancy and attendance cases.
8. Assists Superintendent or designee with filing petitions and attends court hearings for attendance (truancy) and discipline problems as needed.
9. Assists with scheduling and assigning students for instruction.
10. Assists with extra-curricular activities at the level assigned.
11. Attends meetings, trainings, seminars, and workshops as required.
12. Attends and assists with supervision of school system activities, events, ceremonies, and conferences as needed.
13. Assists with the supervision of classroom instruction.
14. Assists with the distribution and accounting of textbooks and supplies.
15. Assists with the evaluation of staff members.
16. Communicates effectively with staff, students, parents, and the community.
17. Engages in professional growth and demonstrates professional ethics and effective leadership.
18. Responds to inquiries, requests, constructive feedback, concerns and/or complaints in a timely and positive manner.
19. Assumes overall responsibility for the school when the principal is absent.
20. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system.
21. Uses effective collaboration skills to work as a productive team member.
22. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
23. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws.
24. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner.
25. Additional duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
