Environmental Protection Specialist (Technical Career Field (TCF) Trainee)

Summary This position is being filled under the VA Pathways Recent Graduate Program, which provides recent graduates with work experience related to their degree and career goals. The program lasts two years and offers eligibility for permanent employment upon completion of the program requirements. Eligibility & Qualifications Recent Graduate Requirement: Must be a recent graduate legally permitted to work in the U.S. and have obtained a qualifying degree (associate, bachelor, master, professional, doctoral, or technical/vocational degree or certificate) from a qualifying institution within the previous two years, or within nine months of completing the degree if academic requirements are met beforehand. Minimum Qualification: GS-09 level. Applicants must meet at least one of the following: Specialized Experience: One year of experience equivalent to GS-07 in the occupational line of progression. Must be documented on the resume with job title, duties, dates, and hours worked per week. Education: Graduate degree (master or equivalent) or two full years of progressive graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.B./J.D. related. Transcripts required. Combination: Combined education and experience that totals the GS-09 requirement up to 100% of the requirement. Veteran Preference: Eligible veterans who were precluded from applying due to active duty may begin the 2-year eligibility period upon release or discharge. Preference does not apply for current or former federal employees. Work Hours: Full-time employment is at least 35 hours per week. Part-time experience is credited pro‑rated. Physical Requirements: May include walking, standing, carrying light items, driving or traveling by motor vehicle. Duties Environmental Protection Specialist (TCF) position in Facilities Management Service at VA Boston Healthcare System, Jamaica Plain, MA. Full-time, 40 hours per week; developmental position leading to GS-11 after a two-year training plan. Follow a formal training plan with coaching and supervision by a preceptor selected annually. Apply knowledge of environmental laws and regulations to ensure compliance (air emissions, wastewater discharge, hazardous waste, etc.). Collect and evaluate environmental data and compliance using appropriate analytical methods. Recommend control measures, best practices, and necessary changes. Assist with hazardous waste and residual shipping. Prepare and conduct briefings, write reports and letters. Support environmental sustainability initiatives. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 07:00‑15:30. Telework may be authorized; eligibility discussed during interview. May require travel to other VA Boston Healthcare System campuses and CBOCs. Additional Information Position is in the Excepted Service and is an AFGE National Labor Relations Act bargaining unit. Not authorized for relocation incentives, PCS, or financial disclosure.
