Trial Attorney (Tax Litigation Branch).

Attorneys in the Appellate Section have a significant amount of responsibility and work in a collegial environment with experienced litigators. The work includes preparing briefs and presenting oral arguments in the United States Courts of Appeals nationwide, and occasionally in state appellate courts, when an appeal is taken from a decision of a United States district court, the United States Tax Court, the Court of Federal Claims, or a state trial court. Appellate attorneys review adverse decisions and prepare recommendations to the Office of the Solicitor General about whether the government should appeal. They also assist the Office of the Solicitor General in preparing briefs in the United States Supreme Court. This is not a remote location position. You will be required to work in person five days a week. Conditions of Employment Must be a U.S. Citizen or National Must complete a background investigation to include drug testing All male applicants born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service and certify registration or demonstrate exempt status May require completion of a 2‑year trial period (see Trial Period Statement) May be required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access, depending on assignment Persons selected will be required to pass a drug test screening for illegal drug use prior to final appointment Financial disclosure will be required in accordance with DOJ and Federal ethics guidelines Qualifications Applicants must possess a J.D. or equivalent, be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney in any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia, and be an active member of the bar in good standing. GS-11: up to one (1) year of legal experience GS-12: one (1) or more years post-J.D. experience GS-13: at least one and one-half (1.5) years of post-J.D. experience GS-14: at least two and one-half (2.5) years of post-J.D. experience GS-15: at least four (4) years of post-J.D. experience Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the vacancy announcement. Preferred Qualifications Applicants should have excellent writing, research, negotiation, oral communication, and interpersonal skills; exhibit good judgment; and have litigation experience. A background in tax law is helpful but not required. Judicial clerkship and appellate litigation experience are desirable. Trial Period Statement As a condition of employment, a two‑year trial period will be imposed. During the trial period, performance and conduct, agency needs and interests, whether continued employment advances agency or government goals, and the efficiency of federal service will be considered. Upon completion, employment will terminate unless certified in writing that it advances the public interest. Education All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Foreign education may be considered if it is comparable; relevant documentation must be submitted and in English or with an English translation. Veteran Preference Veterans must indicate the type of veteran preference (5 or 10 points) on the resume and attach supporting documentation (e.g., DD-214, Certificate of Release or Discharge). N/A for less‑than‑10‑point preference.
