Four (4) years of professional experience in government operations is required . A post-secondary degree from an accredited college or university may be used as an alternative for years of experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferences: 

• Experience working in a government financial operation.
• Experience reviewing financial information and/or operations of government entities.
• Team leadership or supervisory experience.

SPECIAL NOTES:

This position requires some travel.

This position requires a security background check, including fingerprint as a condition of employment.

Employees of the Department of Financial Services are paid on a monthly pay cycle.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING REQUIRED ENTRY LEVEL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Thorough knowledge of governmental operations, financial reporting and budgeting.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to supervise, coach, and evaluate employees.
• Strong project management and organizational skills.
• Proficiency in common software applications including Microsoft Excel, and financial reporting systems.
• Ability to manage multiple engagements simultaneously.
• Experience developing accounting and/or budgetary best practices and procedures.  

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES :

The Director of Government Accountability is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising financial audits and reviews of government entities, including political subdivisions of the state. The Director oversees audit teams, reviews workpapers and contracts, communicates findings to management, and promotes continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, organize, and lead financial audits and programmatic reviews of government entities.
• Develop financial review strategies, risk assessments, and detailed audit programs.
• Supervise and mentor staff throughout all phases of the financial review or audit.
• Review workpapers to ensure accuracy, completeness and quality.
• Evaluate internal controls and identify areas of financial and operational risk.
• Analyze accounting records, financial statements, and supporting documentation.
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, grant requirements, and compliance with governmental accounting standards.
• Prepare and review reports, management representations and responses, and recommendations.
• Present findings to Department management and other stakeholders.
• Coordinate with government management to resolve audit and programmatic issues and recommendations.
• Monitor audit progress, budgets, staffing, and deadlines.
• Provide technical guidance on local governmental accounting, finance, operational and auditing matters.
• Participate in policy development, audit methodology improvements, and staff training.
• Maintain professional relationships with government entities while preserving independence.
• Performs other related duties and responsibilities as directed.
