Thank you for considering a sub-internship at the Hawaii Island Family Medicine Residency Program (HIFMR) for your future professional development. Over the last twenty years, training family medicine residents in East Hawaii has evolved from a dream to reality. With the support of countless community members, political officials, and local groups/leaders, our program launched in 2014 with our inaugural class of PGY1s. Our program is a fully ACGME-accredited, community-based family medicine residency training program sponsored by Hilo Benioff Medical Center.

During their training at HIFMR, our residents care for patients from across all socioeconomic backgrounds and ethnicities from around the world. Our patient panel includes a balance across the age spectrum; we care for patients from keiki to kupuna. Most clinical rotations are at Hilo Benioff Medical Center, including the family medicine inpatient service along with ICU, obstetrics, surgery, inpatient pediatrics, and ED. Our continuity clinic experience is at the East Hawai’i Health Clinic, where PGY1s are assigned to teams with their faculty advisor and senior residents. Residents will learn team-based care by collaborating with clinic-based pharmacists, clinical psychologists and associated graduate students, and advanced practice nurses in order that we may provide comprehensive care to patients. We have opportunities for electives at facilities throughout Hawaii. Our residents participate in a dedicated half-day of didactics every week, as well weekly hospital case reports and lead monthly hospital Grand Rounds.

Our faculty members have practiced family medicine in a broad range of practice models and have over 100 years of faculty experience combined. We are dedicated to offering our varied skill sets and expertise to train our residents to be the best possible family medicine physicians.

In 2021, we graduated our fifth class of family physicians and we have recently welcomed six interns for the Class of 2024. Our graduates are thriving in diverse practice settings. We warmly invite you to be a part of our family medicine team.
