Labor Relations Counsel

About This Role The California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) Legal Division seeks an attorney to be the first chair attorney litigating administrative hearings, arguing writs, motions, and appeals in civil court while maintaining work‑life balance. The attorney will handle diverse labor and employment duties, including litigation, training, workplace investigations, in‑house counsel on employment matters, and drafting legal opinions for senior executives. Represent CalHR and, when authorized, other state departments in civil litigation across state and federal courts, including appellate courts. Collaborate with a team of 15‑20 attorneys, mentor junior attorneys, and manage cases from inception to resolution. Location & Telework Office: 1810 16th Street, Sacramento Telework: Eligible for telework up to five days per week; beginning July12026, in‑person attendance required at least four days per week. Qualifications CA State BAR License Experience in labor and employment law, including litigation before superior or federal courts and administrative agencies. Strong written and oral communication skills. Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced environment. Desirable Qualifications Practical experience in litigation before superior or federal courts, and/or administrative agencies. Experience in administrative law and legal research and analysis. Pay $7,969.00 - $10,473.00 L/month $8,969.00 - $12,026.00 M/month $7,506.00 - $9,439.00 N/month $8,448.00 - $10,836.00 O/month New to State candidates hired into minimum salary or alternate range.
