Psychiatric Registered Nurse (Psych RN)

We are seeking a dedicated Psychiatric Registered Nurse to provide exceptional care in a dynamic inpatient psychiatric unit. This position involves working closely with adolescents and adults experiencing a variety of mental health issues, emphasizing a patient-centered approach.

Position Details

• Unit Type: Psychiatric Unit
• Shift Length: 12 hours
• Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week
• Required Certifications: BLS Certification, CHI Health Workplace Violence Prevention
• Experience Required: Minimum of 2 years in acute/inpatient or state hospital settings

Patient Population

The unit serves a diverse population, including adolescents and adults managing conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. The unit features 25 licensed beds, with ratios of 3:1 for adults and 6:1 for adolescents.

Key Responsibilities

• Engage in hands-on patient care, including conducting 15-minute patient rounds.
• Utilize strong de-escalation techniques and effective communication skills.
• Assist with the management of challenging behaviors, including the use of mechanical restraints and seclusion when necessary.
• Collaborate with mental health technicians, occupational therapists, and other team members.
• Participate in a self-scheduling process based on seniority.

Required Skills

The successful candidate should possess:

• Excellent de-escalation skills and the ability to communicate effectively with patients.
• Experience with adolescent populations is preferred.
• A proactive approach to patient care, with a focus on being actively involved in the therapeutic process.
• Patience and the ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.

Work Environment

This position is in a locked inpatient unit located on the fourth floor. Staff are equipped with emergency response tools, including code blue and yellow buttons for immediate assistance. Occupational therapy services are available during weekdays.

Additional Information

• Floating Requirements: Flexibility to float throughout the hospital for assistance.
• Weekend and Holiday Requirements: Every other weekend and holiday.
• Dress Code: Any color scrub except maroon; business casual attire is also acceptable.
• Orientation: Two 12-hour shifts of unit-specific orientation will be provided.
