Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ED RN for a 13-week travel contract at a Level 2 Trauma Center, with evening and night shifts on straight weekends and required ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, PALS, and TNCC certifications.

• Work in a combined 38-bed Emergency and Urgent Care unit at an Adult and Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center, STEMI receiving center, and Stroke Center
• Unit features 5 trauma bays/resuscitation rooms and 4 dedicated psych rooms within the department
• Common diagnoses include chest pain, abdominal pain, sepsis, syncope, elevated heart rate, headache, and suicidal ideation
• Common drips include heparin, nitroglycerin, diltiazem, amiodarone, nicardipine, and norepinephrine
• Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:3 in the ED and 1:6 in Urgent Care
• Department sees approximately 140–180 patients per day
• RNs are responsible for drawing labs; phlebotomy draws blood cultures unless unavailable within 20 minutes, in which case the RN or tech covers
• RNs are expected to triage both walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals
• ER holds are intermixed within the department; no separate holding area
• X-ray and CT are located within the department
• GE monitors are used throughout the department; RNs are expected to monitor patient rhythms (no monitor techs)
• RT is available in-house 24/7 and assists with ABGs, breathing treatments, intubations, and respiratory concerns; RT equipment includes vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen
• Charting system is Cerner (transitioning to Epic); Cerner experience is preferred
• 12-hour shifts; available shift times include 05:00–17:00, 07:00–19:00, 08:00–20:00, 09:00–21:00, 10:00–22:00, 11:00–23:00, 15:00–03:00, 17:00–05:00, and 19:00–07:00
• Scheduled for straight weekends (evenings and nights), with occasional possibility of a day shift on a weekend
• Every other weekend required
• Every other holiday required
• No formal on-call requirement; occasional standby may be requested if census is low prior to a shift
• Floating is limited to patient sitter or support roles only — travelers will not be assigned a patient team on other units

Requirements

• Active WI or Compact RN license required by start date
• Minimum 2 years of ED experience required
• Level 1 or Level 2 trauma center experience required
• Pediatric ED experience required
• Required certifications: ACLS (AHA), BLS (AHA), NIHSS, PALS (AHA), and TNCC — all must be active
• Cerner EMR experience preferred
• 2 professional references required for consideration: 1 supervisor reference from within the last 12 months of relevant experience, and 1 peer or supervisor reference from within the last 3 years of relevant experience

Additional Information

• Candidates who previously worked for this health system as permanent staff must have an end date at least 6 months prior to their consideration date, and hospital approval is required
• Candidates residing within 80 miles of the facility are considered local and may be subject to a reduced travel pay rate
• Orientation consists of 3 days: Day 1 includes computer-based training and department orientation; Days 2 and 3 are on-unit orientation with an RN preceptor
• Scheduling is managed by an RN scheduler — no self-scheduling; block scheduling is not typically accommodated
• Support staff includes a 24/7 HUC, techs (scheduled 07:00–03:00) capable of IVs, labs, blood cultures, and EKGs, and on-staff paramedics who can administer medications, discharge patients, and assist with procedures
• Charge nurse is present on all shifts; day shift charge typically does not take a patient assignment, while night shift may depending on census
• House Supervisor is available 24/7
• Security is in-house 24/7 (not stationed in the ED); local police are also available for assistance
• ENPC certification is encouraged but not required
• Any solid color scrubs are required — clean and professional appearance expected
