Transportation Maintenance Crew Chief

State Job Title/s: Transportation Mntnce Spec VI Leads a crew of transportation maintenance technicians and equipment operators performing skilled transportation maintenance activities. Reports to a maintenance section supervisor and assists in administration of the maintenance section. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as needed basis. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor. Essential Duties Assists in administration of the maintenance section. Estimates and gathers materials and equipment necessary to complete assignments. Inspects roads while en route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors. Operates light and heavy equipment. Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment. Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems; presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members’ career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Education High School Grad or Equivalent in general education. Experience 5 years' experience in roadway maintenance related work. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class \"A\" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class \"A\" CDL, within 120 calendar days from date of employment. Competencies Extensive knowledge of: Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Considerable knowledge of: Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures Incident management procedures Expert skill in: Operating light and heavy highway equipment Proficient skill in: Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment Prioritizing and organizing work assignments Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others Delegates both routine and important tasks and decisions; shares authority but has ultimate accountability Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions Subject to noise Subject to hazards - moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
