Description


Under general supervision, establishes, enforces, collects and disburses child support orders and payments; and performs other work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Child Support Caseworker I is the entry-level class in the Child Support Caseworker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn office, County and department procedures. As experience is gained, incumbents work more independently within established guidelines.


Child Support Caseworker II is the working level class of this series, fully competent to independently perform a variety of child support services. Positions are characterized by the presence of fairly clear guidelines form which to make decisions and the availability of supervision in non-routine circumstances.

Progression to higher level of this series is based upon certification from the department head and confirmation by the County Administrator that the employee is performing at the higher level and is assigned the relevant duties on a regular basis. Employees in the class of Child Support Caseworker I are normally expected to qualify for promotion to Child Support Caseworker II within twelve months of hire into the class.

The Child Support Supervisor is distinguished form the Child Support Caseworker in that the former not only participates in the management of the caseload but also responsible for supervisor of the program and the staff assigned to the unit.


The Child Support Caseworker is distinguished form the Administrative Clerk series by its participatory responsibility in the enforcement of all actions necessary to fulfill the legal requirements associated with the Child Support orders.

Examples of Duties


The duties listed below are examples of the work typically performed by employees in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties which are not listed below.

  1. Establishes child support obligations; interviews custodial and non-custodial parents; reviews and verifies financial statements, records and documents; drafts legal documents and correspondence; completes worksheets and forms; prepares case transfer; prepares case for default or contempt proceedings; prepares various reports.
  2. Locates absent parents through postal, DMV, state and federal records, employment inquires, and other methods.
  3. Establishes parentage by contacting alleged father, arranging for DNA testing, and completing appropriate forms and documents.
  4. Collects and disburses child support payments; balances receipts and payments; prepares and mails checks; posts and balances accounts.
  5. Answers questions from Nevada State Welfare, other jurisdictions and agencies and the general public about child support policies, procedures, regulations, and individual cases.
  6. Appears in Court on behalf of the State of Nevada as a witness in child support case matters.
  7. Establishes wage withholdings and garnishments; locates assets and places liens; intercepts unemployment, IRS, SIIS, and other benefits.
  8. Maintains computerized and paper records and files.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge and Ability:

Knowledge of basic office procedures; basic arithmetic and bookkeeping.


Ability to interview individuals in order to gather specific information; read and understand complex rules, regulations, and procedures; deal with stressful situations; deal with people from a wide variety of backgrounds; type and use a keyboard accurately; operate standard office machines.

Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:

Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D. certificate and two years of work experience in an office or other environment that included substantial public contact and gathering and reviewing a variety of legal documents.

Nevada Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) (1):
  • Humboldt County, Nevada contributes 36.75% of an eligible Regular Member's salary for retirement.
Nevada Deferred Compensation Program (NDC):
  • The NDC is voluntary retirement savings program for employees of the State of Nevada, NSHE and other local government employers.
  • The program is designed to supplement other retirement savings and pensions.
  • Contributions are made pre-tax and investment earnings are tax-deferred or you may invest on pre-tax (Roth) basis and your investment earnings will be tax free upon eligible withdrawal.
  • Both types of deductions are made through payroll.
Insurance Coverage
Insurance Stipend:
  • Humboldt County, Nevada provides a monthly insurance stipend to assist employees who elect to participate in any of the County offered insurance plans.
  • The stipend for Fiscal Year 2025-2026 is $1,300.00 per month.
Health Insurance Eligibility:
  • Employees working 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health insurance coverage.
  • Eligible employees as defined in the group health insurance plan are eligible to enroll in the group health insurance plan effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Dependents of employees, as defined in the current plan booklet, are also eligible for coverage under the insurance plan at the employee's expense.
  • Employees must authorize a payroll deduction of any share of the health coverage premium, which is to be paid by the employee.

    3. After deductible has been met, a coinsurance (2) of the following will be applied:
      1. In Network: 20%, and
      2. Out of Network: 50%.
  2. High-Deductible Plan with HSA
    1. Monthly coverage costs are:
      1. Employee only: $794.10,
      2. Employee and Spouse: $1,747.02,
      3. Employee and Child/Children: $1,429.38, and
      4. Employee and Family: $2,461.74.
    2. The calendar year deductibles for this plan are:
      1. Individual In Network: $3,000.00,
      2. Individual Out of Network: $3,000.00,
      3. Family In Network: $6,000.00, and
      4. Family Out of Network: $6,000.00.
    3. After deductible has been met, a coinsurance of the following will be applied:

Leave Plans
Annual Leave:
  • All full-time employees will earn annual leave beginning from their initial date of hire at a rate of .0385 hours earned per hour's paid (3).
  • Part-time employees who regularly work 20 hours or more per week will earn annual leave on a pro-rated basis.
  • Employees earn additional annual leave hours at 3, 6, 11, 16 and 21 years of service up to a maximum of 192 hours per year.
  • While on probationary period, an employee cannot take annual leave for the first six months; the employee still accrues vacation leave during this time.
Sick Leave:
  • Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees accrue sick leave at the rate of .05 hours for each hour worked up to a maximum accrual of 120 hours per year with a maximum accrual of 980 hours.
Holiday Leave:
  • Eligible Humboldt County, Nevada employees enjoy 12 paid holidays per year plus one additional day as a floating holiday (4).
  • Holidays eligible for paid holiday leave include:
    • New Year's Day,
    • Martin Luther King Day,
    • President's Day,
    • Memorial Day,
    • Juneteenth Day,
    • Independence Day,
    • Labor Day,
    • Nevada Day,

Tuition Reimbursement
  • Humboldt County, Nevada values its employees and empowers them to enhance their skills by taking career related higher education courses as well as participating in job related workshops and seminars.
  • To that end, the County has a generous Tuition Reimbursement policy for accredited courses, reimbursing up to $4,500 per year (5) in educational expenses.
Note : Humboldt County, Nevada provides benefits to regular employees. Most part time positions are ineligible for benefits.


1: PERS retirement benefits are only available to employees hired in positions that work 20 hours per week or more on a regular basis. Positions of less than 20 hours per week (or less than 1040 hours in a fiscal year) will instead receive Social Security contributions.
2: Coinsurance is the percentage of costs paid by employees after they have paid/met their respective deductibles.
3: Employees will accrue annual leave during their introductory period but are not allowed to use annual leave until you they have been employed continuously for at least 6 months.
4: Employees are eligible to receive the additional floating holiday after successful completion of 1 year of service with the County.
