Accounting Manager

Compensation $26-$30 per hour

The Accounting Manager reports to the Director of Finance. This role is responsible for independently managing full-cycle accounting and financial reporting for assigned entities. The position owns the accounting process for complex entities, from transaction review and account reconciliation through adjusting entries, financial statement preparation, and analytical review. The Manager applies accounting judgment to identify errors, unsupported balances, incomplete accounting treatment, unusual financial activity, and weaknesses in accounting processes.

The Manager reviews work completed by Full-Charge Bookkeepers, provides technical guidance develops and improves accounting procedures and workpapers, and escalates material or unusual matters to the Director of Finance.

This role is remote and may require physical presence in South Dakota several times a year.

Accounting Operations and Period-End Close

• Independently manage full-cycle accounting for assigned entities.
• Plan, perform, and complete monthly ad year-end closing activities.
• Review the general ledger for completeness, accuracy, and appropriate classification.
• Prepare and review adjusting journal entries, including accruals, deferrals, allocations, depreciation, investment activity, payroll-related entries, and other entries as applicable.
• Reconcile bank, credit card, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, fixed asset, investment, intercompany, net asset/equity, and other general ledger accounts.
• Ensure all material balance sheet accounts are supported by complete, accurate, and current workpapers.
• Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and other financial reports.
• Review financial statements for reasonableness, consistency, unusual activity, missing transactions, misclassifications, and other potential errors.
• Maintain accurate equity and net asset activity, including restricted and unrestricted activity when applicable.
• Perform accounting research and recommend appropriate treatment for complex or unfamiliar transactions.
• Support annual audits, tax filings, and other external reporting requirements.
• Coordinate with client staff, auditors, tax professionals, financial institutions, and other external parties as needed.

Accounting Review and Quality Assurance

• Review accounting work completed by Full-Charge Bookkeepers and other assigned staff.
• Identify errors and provide clear instructions regarding the necessary correction and underlying accounting rationale.
• Determine whether accounting discrepancies arise from isolated errors, training gaps, inadequate procedures, system configuration, or broader process weaknesses.
• Verify that accounting records and supporting documentation comply with established procedures and applicable accounting standards.
• Monitor the completeness and quality of assigned entities’ accounting records.
• Escalate material, unusual, sensitive, or unresolved accounting matters to the Director of Finance with relevant analysis and recommended action.

Policies, Procedures, and Internal Controls

• Evaluate accounting processes, close procedures, reconciliations, and workpapers for effectiveness and completeness.
• Create, document, implement, and maintain accounting procedures, standard operating procedures, month-end checklists, and supporting workpapers.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen internal controls, improve financial reporting, reduce errors, and increase efficiency.
• Promote consistent accounting practices and documentation across assigned entities.
• Assist with accounting system implementations, conversions, cleanups, and process changes.
• Maintain appropriate documentation of digital records in accordance with organizational and client requirements.

Staff Support and Oversight

• Train and provide technical guidance to Full-Charge Bookkeepers and other accounting staff.
• Delegate appropriate work and monitor its completion.
• Review completed work and provide timely, constructive feedback.
• Help staff understand the relationship between individual accounting tasks, general ledger activity, supporting workpapers, and final financial statements.
• Assist the Director of Finance with staff development, workflow planning, and identification of training or performance needs.
• Provide functional oversight of assigned accounting staff and formal supervision when designated.

Client and Internal Communication

• Communicate financial information and accounting matters clearly to client leadership, Nonprofit Resources staff, and individuals without an accounting background.
• Serve as a liaison among the Finance Department, client leadership, internal staff, auditors, and external service providers.
• Respond to questions and requests accurately, professionally, and within established timelines.
• Attend client, department, and organizational meetings as required.
• Communicate proactively regarding deadlines, unresolved matters, potential reporting issues, and resource needs.

Workload and Administrative Responsibilities

• Manage responsibilities for multiple entities with differing deadlines, processes, and reporting requirements.
• Prioritize work independently and adjust priorities when circumstances change.
• Track outstanding matters and follow through to resolution.
• Recognize when independent research is appropriate and when assistance or escalation is required.
• Learn and accurately use accounting, banking, payroll, expense management, document management, and collaboration systems.
• Maintain accurate daily time records categorized by client and service item.
• Maintain the confidentiality and security of financial, employee, organizational, and client information.
• Perform other duties consistent with the position’s level of responsibility.

Required Qualifications

• Five or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
• Substantial experience independently performing full-cycle accounting and period-end closing.
• Demonstrated experience preparing and analyzing financial statements.
• Demonstrated experience reconciling and substantiating balance sheet accounts
• Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
• Experience investigating and resolving accounting discrepancies.
• Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
• Ability to independently organize and complete work in a remote environment.
• Ability to communicate accounting matters clearly and professionally.

Preferred Qualifications

• Postsecondary education in accounting, finance, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience
• Experience with QuickBooks Online
• Experience with nonprofit, association, or fund accounting
• Experience managing accounting for multiple entities or clients.
• Experience with nonprofit net assets, restricted funds, investments, grants, and audit preparation.
• Experience reviewing accounting work and providing guidance to accounting staff.
• Experience assuming responsibility for unfamiliar or incomplete accounting records.
• Experience developing accounting procedures, workpapers, close checklists, and internal controls.
• Experience with accounting system implementations, conversions, or cleanup projects.

Tools & Technology

The position regularly uses QuickBooks Online, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, Adobe Acrobat, banking platforms, payroll systems, expense management systems, AMS (Association Management Software) systems, and other organization- or client-specific software.

Nonprofit Resources provides MacBooks Pros as standard hardware. Proficiency with macOS is preferred; willingness and ability to become proficient with macOS is required.
