Child Enrichment Ministry: providing childcare during Bible Study

The vision of The Bridge to Hope is to end homelessness One Family at a Time by equipping the church to take a vested interest in a single mother and her children in crisis, a family that has lost hope and direction. The Bridge to Hope provides an avenue for churches to motivate their members to show Christ’s love and give hope to homeless women and their children, facilitating their recovery from homelessness. Part of this is through seeing that they get the essential education and/or training to get a job, so that within approximately two years they can become self-supporting. This is a concept of One Church One Family. Those who are called to step forward in faith to mentor the B2H family are what we call “a team”. These teams of mentors work directly with their sponsored B2H family. The mothers live in apartments that are in close proximity to each other, rented by The Bridge to Hope. They have regular times of fellowship with their mentoring team. Our target population is homeless single mothers (drug-free and alcohol-free) with minor children under the age of 10, who are physically and emotionally capable of becoming employed full-time. Currently, the number of families served is five. Historically, we have served approximately 8–12 families a year with the capacity to serve one family for up to 24 months. The Bridge to Hope’s ministry is presently limited to Phoenix, Arizona. Organization: The Bridge to Hope Location: Phoenix, AZ Commitment: Monday and Thursday evenings (flexible options available) The Bridge to Hope is a Christian nonprofit ministry serving single mothers transitioning out of homelessness. Each Monday evening, our moms gather for Bible study and community as they rebuild their lives. While the mothers are learning and growing, their children participate in our Child Enrichment Ministry (CEM) . We are currently seeking volunteers—especially those studying Special Education, Speech Pathology, Occupational Therapy, Psychology, or related fields —to spend time with several children who are on the autism spectrum and are nonverbal . This is not simply childcare. It is an opportunity to provide patient, attentive care to children who thrive with calm, consistent adults who are willing to meet them where they are. Volunteer Responsibilities Engage children through play, sensory activities, and simple structured interaction Provide patient, supportive care for children who are nonverbal and may communicate in alternative ways Help create a safe, peaceful environment while their mothers participate in Bible study Work alongside a small team of caring volunteers Ideal Volunteers Students studying Special Education, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Child Development, Psychology, or related fields Individuals who are patient, compassionate, and attentive Those who are comfortable learning new ways children communicate People who value serving families working toward stability and independence Why This Matters For many of the mothers we serve, finding a safe place for their children—especially children with special needs—can be incredibly difficult. When volunteers step in to care for these kids, it allows their mothers the space to grow spiritually, build community, and move forward with hope. Sometimes the most meaningful ministry is simply sitting on the floor with a child, meeting them in their world, and letting them know they are safe and valued.
