Staff R&D Engineer

Abbott seeks a Staff R&D Engineer for its Electrophysiology division in Plymouth, Minnesota. This role focuses on flexible circuit design and development for cardiac medical devices, requiring deep expertise in flex circuit materials, manufacturing processes, and cross-functional collaboration within a regulated environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead design and development of single- and multi-layer flexible circuits, including rigid-flex configurations
• Perform design for manufacturability and assembly reviews with suppliers and internal stakeholders
• Develop and maintain design documentation including ECAD data, Gerber files, BOMs, and risk assessments
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define design requirements and support prototype builds
• Interface with flex circuit suppliers to ensure quality, cost, and delivery targets are achieved

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Material Science, or related field
• 6+ years of hands-on flexible circuit design and development experience
• Strong knowledge of flex circuit materials, stack-ups, impedance control, and signal integrity
• Experience leading complex technical workstreams and influencing cross-functional teams
• Proficiency with industry-standard CAD tools such as Altium or Mentor Graphics
• Experience in regulated industries, preferably medical devices or aerospace
