Emergency Vehicle Technician I Job Description Position Summary The Emergency Vehicle Technician I (EVT I) is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and outfitting of emergency response vehicles and related equipment. This entry-level technician position supports law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other public safety fleets by ensuring vehicles and systems remain safe, reliable, and operational. Work includes preventive maintenance, emergency lighting systems, sirens, communications equipment, electrical systems, and basic mechanical repairs. The EVT I works under the supervision of a senior technician, fleet manager, or service supervisor and is expected to maintain high standards of workmanship, safety, and professionalism. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Perform preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled services on emergency vehicles. Conduct oil changes, tire rotations, brake inspections, fluid checks, and filter replacements. Diagnose and repair basic mechanical issues involving: Engines Brakes Suspension Steering systems Cooling systems Charging systems Assist with advanced diagnostics and repairs under supervision. Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records. Emergency Equipment Installation and Service Install and maintain: Emergency warning lights Sirens Public address systems Mobile radios In-car camera systems Prisoner transport equipment Consoles and vehicle accessories Perform basic wiring, soldering, crimping, and electrical troubleshooting. Read and interpret wiring diagrams and installation schematics. Test and verify proper operation of installed equipment. Inspections and Safety Conduct vehicle safety inspections and identify deficiencies. Ensure compliance with applicable DOT, OSHA, NFPA, state, and agency standards. Maintain clean and organized work areas. Properly use shop tools, lifts, testing equipment, and PPE. Follow lockout/tagout and other safety procedures. Customer and Operational Support Communicate professionally with agency personnel and customers. Respond to emergency service calls when necessary. Assist with fleet readiness and vehicle upfitting projects. Participate in training and certification programs. Minimum Qualifications Education High school diploma or GED required. Technical school training in automotive technology, diesel technology, electrical systems, or related field preferred. Experience One (1) year of automotive, fleet, or equipment maintenance experience preferred. Experience with 12-volt electrical systems preferred. Experience working with emergency vehicles is preferred but not required. Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license required. Ability to obtain Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certification preferred. ASE certifications are desirable. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate tools and equipment. Working Conditions Work performed in shop and field environments.
