Position Title Athletic Trainer – Certified Department & Location Primary Location: Palomar College has multiple campuses (San Marcos, Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, and Fallbrook); training may occur at any of these locations. Full or Part Time Full-Time, 40 hours per week. Work Schedule Tuesday–Saturday, 12:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Occasional night and weekend hours required. Schedule subject to change based on future department needs. Grade Grade 30 (with a 3% differential pay for hours worked between 6:00 pm and 10:00 pm). Primary Function Develops, coordinates, and administers a comprehensive sports medical program focused on prevention and care of athletic injuries related to intercollegiate sports and physical education; educates student athletes on injury prevention; administers treatment and rehabilitation to injured athletes. Minimum Qualifications Three years of experience performing preventative and/or rehabilitative athletic modalities. Equivalently a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology or a related field. Transcripts required to process education equivalency. Only coursework completed at accredited institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education will be considered. Preferred Qualifications Experience at a 3C2A, NJCAA, NAIA, or NCAA institution or high school. Coursework beyond the minimum qualifications in athletic training or related field. Experience with a football team including injury evaluation, emergency management, return‑to‑play protocols. Experience using Electronic Medical Records and insurance forms. Licenses and Certificates Valid California driver’s license. Athletic Trainer Certified certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification. Certification in first aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers. Supervision Received Director, Athletics. Duties and Responsibilities Serves as the athletic trainer for an 18‑sport intercollegiate community college athletics program; provides services to the District’s Athletics Department, including attendance at scheduled team practices and competitions. Participates in injury prevention, coordinating with team physicians and developing conditioning programs for each sport and coaching staff; designs, fabricates, fits, and applies protective equipment. Recognizes and evaluates athletes’ injuries and illnesses; inspects injured areas and performs accepted techniques and tests; makes referrals and administers first aid as necessary. Oversees rehabilitation programs; restores athletes to normal function through modalities and exercise; informs coaches regularly of injury status. Documents and maintains all treatment records; ensures compliance with safety and sanitation standards. Oversees athletic trainer students; manages the Athletic Training Room operations; contributes to the program budget and supply control for 22 sports. Performs weight management data collection for wrestling athletes. Other related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Knowledge of athletic injury prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation; anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, etc. Understanding of sports mechanics and potential injuries. Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing sports injuries. Skill in operating diagnostic and therapeutic equipment and devices. Skill in administering first aid, CPR, and AED, and immobilizing injuries. Skill in preparing and maintaining accurate records with EMR systems. Understanding of diverse backgrounds of students and staff. Ability to establish effective relationships with coaches, athletes, physicians, and staff. Working Conditions In an athletic training room with moderate noise; at events exposed to wet/humid conditions; requires physical fitness and ability to lift 50–100 pounds and travel. Terms of Employment Full‑time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year. Probationary period of six months. Required pre‑employment requirements: live scan/fingerprinting, official transcripts, TB risk assessment, pre‑employment physical.
