About the Role:

The Group Leader for the COMPASS Afterschool Program in Fresh Meadow, Flushing and College Point plays a pivotal role in fostering a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for children participating in the program. This position is responsible for leading a group of students through structured activities that promote academic enrichment, social development, and personal growth. The Group Leader collaborates closely with program staff, parents, and community partners to ensure that each child’s needs are met and that the program’s goals are achieved. By providing guidance, mentorship, and supervision, the Group Leader helps cultivate a positive atmosphere that encourages learning and creativity. Ultimately, this role contributes significantly to the overall success and impact of the COMPASS Afterschool Program within the Fresh Meadow community.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development, or related field preferred.
• Experience working with children is preferred in an educational or recreational setting.
• Strong understanding of child development principles and age-appropriate practices.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required clearances and certifications, including background checks and first aid/CPR certification.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with children, parents, and colleagues.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience leading or supervising groups in an afterschool or youth program setting.
• Familiarity with the COMPASS Afterschool Program framework or similar educational enrichment programs.
• Bilingual abilities, particularly in Spanish or other languages commonly spoken in the Fresh Meadow community.
• Training or certification in conflict resolution, behavior management, or trauma-informed care.
• Proficiency with basic technology tools used for program documentation and communication.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise and lead a group of children during afterschool program activities, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times.
• Plan, organize, and implement educational and recreational activities that align with the program’s curriculum and objectives.
• Monitor and support children’s academic progress and social development, providing individualized attention as needed.
• Communicate regularly with parents, guardians, and program staff regarding student progress, behavior, and any concerns.
• Maintain accurate attendance records, incident reports, and other documentation in compliance with program policies.
• Collaborate with other staff members to create a cohesive and inclusive program environment.
• Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities to enhance program delivery.

The Group Leader utilizes strong leadership and organizational skills daily to manage group dynamics and ensure smooth program operations. Effective communication skills are essential for interacting with children, parents, and team members, fostering trust and collaboration. Problem-solving and adaptability are frequently applied to address behavioral challenges and modify activities to meet diverse needs. The ability to plan and implement engaging educational activities requires creativity and a solid understanding of child development. Additionally, proficiency with documentation and technology supports accurate record-keeping and efficient communication within the program.
