Accounting Specialist

Position Summary:

This position specializes in Utility Billing. It requires a flexible mindset and a desire to learn and grow constantly. This position will provide both accounting services and customer/employee interaction. This position will require a persistent and tactful approach to a wide variety of situations.


Essential Functions:

• Coordinates with other Finance and Utility staff to prepare City of Glenwood Springs utility billings for water, sewer, electric, pay-as-you-throw trash, downtown trash and other billings as needed.
• Processes and enters changes in account owners.
• Uploads and reviews utility readings into Tyler ERP checking for errors.
• Researches and prepares accurate customer bills.
• Prepares monthly billing summaries and reports.
• Reconciles utility accounts receivable and deposit to general ledger monthly.
• Works with front office personnel to answer questions, resolve customer complaints, and other general matters.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding all customer account information.
• Establishes and maintains effective, collaborative working relationships with City employees, supervisors, and the general public.
• Performs duties requiring analysis of facts and selection of applicable methods of procedures and is proficient in computer operations and problem solving.
• Provides ad-hoc research and analysis in response to requests from City staff, City Council, the public and other internal constituents.
• Prepares year-end schedules for auditors and provides other data, reports, or information as requested; keeps complete records throughout the year in anticipation of audits and reviews.
• Provides back up support to other Finance personnel as necessary.
• May train, orient or assist fellow employees as needed.

• Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records with great attention to detail.

Education, Training & Certifications:

Necessary:

• Able to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
• Two or more years of experience in a professional office environment.
• Excellent computer skills including MS Excel and other MS Office products, data entry, and the ability to learn and use new and existing account software.

Desired:

• Associates degree in Accounting or Business-related field.
• Two or more years of experience working for public finance, utilities or related business.
• Knowledge of Governmental Accounting principles.
• Experience with Tyler ERP software.
• Able to communicate effectively in Spanish both verbally and in writing.
