Road Maintenance Technician 1

The Valley County Road & Bridge Department is seeking a dedicated, skilled professional to fill the role of Road Maintenance Technician 1. This journey-level position is ideal for an experienced equipment operator who thrives in an active, hands-on environment and takes pride in keeping the county's infrastructure safe and reliable for the community. This is a full-time position with full county benefits.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities

Working under general supervision, the Road Maintenance Technician plays a vital role in maintaining the safety and integrity of county roads and bridges. This position is perfect for an individual who enjoys variety in their workday, as tasks shift seamlessly with the seasons.

  • Spring & Summer Operations: During the warmer months, the technician focuses on vital infrastructure upkeep. This includes performing asphalt patching, crack sealing, gravel road grading, and bridge deck maintenance. The technician also works on improving road drainage by installing and repairing culverts, ditches, and catch basins.
  • Winter Operations: When winter weather hits, the technician takes on the critical responsibility of independent snowplowing, sanding, and de-icing on established county routes. Ensuring the safety of commuters during severe winter conditions is a premier component of this role.

A successful candidate will safely operate standard commercial vehicles and medium-sized maintenance equipment, including single and tandem-axle dump trucks, flatbeds, patch trucks, and small loaders.

Typical Qualifications

The department is looking for an independent, safety-minded driver who can interpret basic work orders, safety manuals, and maps with minimal direct supervision. To be considered for this position, applicants must possess:

  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • At least one (1) year of experience in road maintenance, heavy construction, or commercial driving.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating medium-duty commercial trucks, specifically during severe winter driving conditions.
  • A solid knowledge base of standard road maintenance methods, materials, and safety protocols.

When applying, please provide a resume or detailed work history that shows your relevant training and experience.
