We are looking for a talented student health specialist to join our nursing team! The student health specialist will have involvement with the IEP medical review process with a team of professionals. To coordinate and deliver nursing services to students and staff members to maximize health and wellness in the school community. All duties are performed in accordance with district and state board of education policies and procedures and state law regarding nursing practice.

Provides direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students and staff in response to the nursing assessment and in accordance with professional standards, school policy, procedures, and protocols.

Maintains accurate health documentation of health services delivery.

Makes decisions that demonstrate support of the mission, vision and goals of the district and are in the best interest of the children under the medical nurse's care.

Maintains student health examination and immunization files of students and follows up with students to ensure compliance with state regulations, FERPA and district policy. Tracks and follows up with students who are in the process of meeting compliance standards.

Participates in multi-disciplinary team process, MTSS, and provides specialized health assessments for identified students for IEP's and/or 504 plans Maintains accurate medical records to assure compliance with state mandates including immunizations, physical examinations, and medical conditions, and the related responsibilities.

Administers medication according to written physician orders, with appropriate documentation.

Dispenses medications and logs information into daily medication records under the direction of the District Nurse/Student Health Specialist.

Develops and implements appropriate healthcare plans for students with special medical concerns, diabetes, asthma, allergies, seizures, etc.

Develops and implements an effective system for follow-up on referrals for student medical conditions, which may include home visits.

Develops and maintains communication with all health staff, teachers, parents/guardians, other school personnel, outside healthcare providers, and Student Services administration to enhance action which will meet the health and safety needs of students.

Communicate student medical concerns/regimes to the Director of Student Services and to staff members that have direct interaction with students.

Contacts parents/emergency contacts of all ill/injured students, monitors the student and prepares them to go home if necessary.

Directs the LPNs and Health Aides on health office matters in assigned buildings. Makes appropriate assessment and referrals for suspected abuse/neglect as a mandated reporter.

Completes hearing and vision screenings as needed; if properly certified.

Maintains inventory of medical supplies.

Implements the established protocols for providing first aid care to sick and injured students and staff, including determining the severity of the situation, monitoring the individual, monitoring the exposure to others, disposing properly of bodily fluids and performing technical procedures when necessary, including but not limited to; blood glucose testing, subcutaneous injectable epinephrine, hygiene procedure, etc).

Participates in professional development opportunities.

Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by Building and District administration.

Current Illinois Registered Nurse License or BSN License.

IEP - PEL Designation Required.

First Aid and CPR for healthcare providers preferred.

Vision and Hearing Technician Certification preferred.

Understanding of health and nursing practices and procedures.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

Ability to maintain current licensure, medical expertise and Healthcare provider CPR.

Ability to maintain current knowledge of state compliance guidelines, incorporating changes as notified by the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Ability to work independently, stay on-task, multi-task and take responsibility to complete assigned projects in a timely and efficient manner.

Ability to communicate effectively with parents, students, teachers, administration and community members.

Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others in the course of the workday.

Ability to use e-mail and office equipment effectively.

Ability to work with students individually or in group settings.

Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to communicate with students and staff and to assist students with instruction.

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform basic arithmetic operations as needed to assist students.

Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and is sensitive to individual differences.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of information regarding students, employees and others.

Ability to establish a supportive and compassionate relationship with students.

Ability to report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.

Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Travel between schools, across district may be required.

The position will be evaluated at least once annually, by the last employment day in April by the building principal or assistant principal with input from collaborating teacher(s).

Indoor classrooms/school exposure to: student noise, work in standard school building environment.

Outdoor schoolyard and grounds, field trips: exposure to temperatures (hot, warm, cool & Cold).
