Transplant Hepatologist

The University of Rochester Transplant Institute is growing, and we are seeking a transplant hepatologist to join our dynamic, collaborative team. Clinical responsibilities include patient-focused care across the full continuum, from pre-transplant evaluation through long-term post-transplant management, delivered alongside a multidisciplinary team of transplant surgeons, hepatologists, oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, advanced practice providers, and dedicated transplant coordinators. Candidates will also have the opportunity to be engaged in education and teaching across medical students, residents, and fellows.

An internationally recognized program in transplant oncology

UR Medicine is the only liver transplant program and the only living donor liver transplant program in Upstate New York. The Transplant Institute was one of the first two centers in the nation to offer liver transplantation for select patients with unresectable colorectal liver metastasis, and is now the largest center in the country and second largest in the world performing this operation.

Our five-year experience - published as the Rochester Protocol in the American Journal of Transplantation - reported 100% one-year and 91% three-year overall survival among carefully selected living donor recipients, with no donor mortality, and has helped define international selection criteria in this emerging field. Referrals now come from across the United States. The Institute recently celebrated its 100th living donor liver transplant after the program was resumed in 2016, and our surgical program was the first in the Northeast to perform robotic-assisted kidney transplants and the first in the nation to use histotripsy for cancerous liver tumors. Candidates with an interest in living donation, transplant oncology, or advanced locoregional therapies are especially encouraged to apply.

Leadership and research opportunities

The Transplant Institute was created as a unifying structure for clinical care, research, and education, and its rapid growth has generated real opportunity for physicians early and mid-career alike. Depending on expertise and interests, defined leadership roles are available in specialized areas, which may include transplant oncology, living donor liver transplantation, metabolic and alcohol-associated liver disease, quality and outcomes, or fellowship and trainee education. We are committed to supporting candidates with clear expectations, mentorship, and protected time appropriate to the role.

Our research footprint is expanding under a dedicated Research Director for the Transplant Institute, with active work in transplant oncology, immune profiling, and organ viability and perfusion. The Institute hosts the American Registry for Transplant Oncology (ARTx-Onc), a prospective living donor liver transplant registry for unresectable colorectal liver metastasis, offering ready access to well-curated clinical, pathologic, and molecular

datasets. Investigators also benefit from close collaboration with the Wilmot Cancer Institute and the University's Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Physician-scientists and clinicians seeking to build a research portfolio will find mentorship, biostatistical and regulatory support, and a clear pathway toward extramural funding.

Qualifications

Candidates should be fellows in training or at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Applicants must be board-certified or board-eligible in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology and possess (or be eligible for) medical licensure in the state of New York. Rank and leadership scope will be commensurate with experience. We offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
