Portuguese Medical Interpreter- Per Diem

Job Description Medical interpreting between clinician and patient during face‑to‑face or telephone encounters. Acts as a liaison between patients and staff. Informs clinicians about cultural considerations when treating Portuguese‑speaking patients. Interpreter for ancillary departments. Interprets between non‑clinical staff and patients as needed. Translates into Portuguese patient information materials, consent forms, etc. Edits translated materials. Identifies areas where the hospital can better meet the needs of Portuguese‑speaking communities, e.g., outreach, signage, etc. Explains interpreter model to clinicians and patients. Assists with training staff interpreters. Orients patients to the hospital as needed, e.g., L & D tours, community events, etc. Assists in the coordination/scheduling of freelance interpreters. Assists with data entry/data collection. Completes interpreter paperwork. Assists with scheduling and confirming patient appointments. Supports patients outside of their clinical appointments as needed with issues relating to their care at the hospital. Contributes towards developing an environment that is welcoming and responsive to Portuguese‑speaking patients. Other duties as needed. Qualifications Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree or experience. Excellent rating on Interpreter Assessment Evaluation. Bi‑lingual (oral and written) bi‑cultural skills. Medical interpreting skills, including accuracy and memory. Basic anatomy and physiology vocabulary in English and Portuguese. Experience working as an interpreter in a clinical environment. Ability to work well as a team with clinicians and patients. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Working Conditions Normal office environment. Outpatient clinical environment with some exposure to infectious diseases and cleaning solutions. Adherence to safety procedures minimizes the risk of injury. Normal office environment for administrative duties. Pay Range $25.04 - $37.56 per hour.
