Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

Overview The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Alaska is a vibrant and energetic office with offices in Anchorage, Fairbanks and Juneau. This employment opportunity is in the Civil Division of the Anchorage office. AUSAs in the Civil Division represent the federal government, its agencies and employees in civil litigation at both trial and appellate levels. Duties AUSA in the Civil Division handle a range of civil matters, including tort cases (such as medical malpractice and personal injury) and Title VII discrimination cases. Other practice areas include civil rights, immigration, bankruptcy, debts owed to the United States or its agencies, judicial review of administrative findings, and injunctive proceedings. Responsibilities include representing the government in civil litigation, taking depositions, preparing and answering interrogatories, negotiating settlements, engaging in motion practice, trying cases, and writing and arguing appeals. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex with experience. Residency and Selective Service Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which they are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information. Selective Service: Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must certify registration with the Selective Service System, or be exempt. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable. J.D. degree and active membership of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required. Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Applicants must have excellent academic credentials, a J.D. degree, an active membership in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction, minimum one (1) year post-J.D. experience, superior analytical abilities and oral communication skills, excellent research and writing skills, good judgment and strong character. Mentoring and training will be provided. United States citizenship is required. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement. Education Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree. Salary and Benefits Salary: Assistant United States Attorney pay is determined based, in part, on years of professional attorney experience. The basic pay range is $80,000 to $197,100, which includes 32.36% locality pay. In addition, there is a non-taxable cost of living allowance where authorized. Benefits: The Department of Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, telework, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Relocation: Relocation expenses will not be authorized. Other Information Travel: Some travel is required.
