This opportunity entails being responsible for daily inspection efforts on multiple complex, large, and/or diverse projects. You will prepare daily and weekly reports on work accomplished by contractors, review periodical pay estimates for accuracy, prepare sketches and assemble data for Field Engineers, and may participate in mentoring, development, and evaluation of staff inspectors. What You’ll Do: Inspect, observe, document, and verify work in progress by the construction contractor to ensure compliance with project schedule, contract documents, and plans; confirm procedures are followed and materials meet specifications. Advising the contractor superintendent of necessary actions to ensure conformance with plans, specs, and contract; review and resolve quantity disputes with the contractor. Utilize engineering inspection practices to perform sophisticated mathematical calculations, constructability and biddability reviews, and measurements of completed work to date. Review Inspector’s daily report of assigned work activities, contractor labor and equipment, and quantity of material received and verified. Perform on‑site material testing and produce as‑constructed sketches. Lead daily assignments, mentor, and train employees. Perform other duties as assigned. What You’ll Need: High School Diploma/GED or equivalent and 9 years of construction‑related experience. All required jurisdictional certificates and state requirements. What You’ll Bring: Coordinate with contractor staff, communicate effectively with all parties, and possess good interpersonal skills. Verify the implementation of contract documents. Produce thorough inspection reports and maintain detailed records of work performed. Prepare and monitor internal HNTB project controls for field personnel. Produce and maintain punch lists. Proactively recognize complex construction or engineering problems and bring them to resolution with the contractor. Apply standard testing techniques and procedures for the verification of material. What We Prefer: Four‑year degree strongly preferred. Driver’s License. Proficient use of Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience working on VDOT projects preferred. Working knowledge of VDOT Road and Bridge Specifications, Road and Bridge Standards, Construction Manual and Inspector Manual. Able to read and interpret complex plans, specifications, and shop drawings. Able and willing to work a shift schedule and/or flexible schedules as required to support the workload, as well as in inclement weather, heights, confined spaces and marine environments. Able to lift 25 lbs. Ability to multitask.
