Custodian Position

Under the direction of the assigned manager, perform a full range of custodial duties related to the care, maintenance and cleaning of assigned buildings and facilities; report unsatisfactory or dangerous conditions to higher level staff and to perform a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Essential Functions:

• Perform a variety of custodial duties related to the care, maintenance and cleaning of college buildings and facilities.
• Sweep, vacuum, mop, wax, strip and polish floors; vacuum and shampoo carpets.
• Clean and sanitize restroom facilities and fixtures including sinks, urinals and toilets; wash windows, mirrors and walls; clean and sanitize showers; replenish supplies in restrooms.
• Dust and polish furniture, woodwork and fixtures; clean desks and counter tops; erase any remaining chalk or ink from boards; replace chalks or pens; replace lights and clean and adjust shades and blinds.
• Empty, clean and sanitize waste receptacles; pick up paper, litter and other debris in classrooms, offices and stairwells.
• Assist in moving and arranging furniture and setting up rooms for meetings, as requested.
• Survey buildings and grounds for possible hazards and notify security; report possible problems and damage.
• Secure District rooms and facilities at night if requested; open gates and classrooms in the morning, as requested.
• Restock and collect money from assigned campus vending machines.
• Perform special assignments and carry out instructions given by assigned supervisory staff. Assist faculty and staff with related concerns.
• Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
• Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge of:

• Operations, services and activities of a custodial program.
• Tools, equipment and supplies used in providing comprehensive custodial and minor building maintenance services.
• Knowledge of safe use of cleaning products.
• Principles of sanitation and disinfection.
• Safe use of various cleaning chemicals and supplies.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety practices.

Ability to:

• Perform a variety of custodial and maintenance activities.
• Work individually and as a team.
• Explain and comply with department policies and procedures.
• Utilize a variety of cleaning chemicals and supplies in a safe and effective manner.
• Manage time and follow established cleaning priorities.
• Identify custodial and maintenance needs and initiate corrective actions.

• Work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility.

Education and Experience: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be: Education: High school diploma or the equivalent. Experience: No prior experience required. This is an entry level classification for the Custodian II classification.

Physical Demands: Continuous to frequent walking and standing; heavy lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds unassisted. Work Environment: Work takes place within indoor and outdoor environments. Hazards: Work takes place within a variety of environmental and weather conditions. Work may involve exposure to gas, fumes, exhaust, dust, dirt, and tools with sharp edges. Work may involve working at heights when climbing ladders.
