Job Title: Vessel Fitter / Fabricator Job Description

This role involves fitting and fabricating vessels and shell plate to construct water towers and storage tanks by interpreting blueprints and drawings. You will lay out, fit up, and perform structural and tack welds using flux core processes, while determining the correct orientation and degrees of the vessel. The position requires strong technical accuracy, the ability to work independently from drawings, and a solid understanding of pressure vessels and structural steel components.

Responsibilities

• Fit and fabricate vessels and shell plate to construct water towers and storage tanks using detailed blueprints and drawings.

• Interpret blueprints, drawings, and schematics to determine vessel orientation, degrees, and layout requirements.

• Perform complete layout and fit-up work independently, including marking, measuring, and preparing materials for fabrication.

• Execute structural and tack welds using flux core welding processes in accordance with project specifications.

• Fit pressure vessels accurately, ensuring proper alignment, orientation, and structural integrity.

• Use a tape measure and other measuring tools to verify dimensions, tolerances, and alignment throughout the fabrication process.

• Operate a cutting torch to cut, shape, and prepare materials for vessel fabrication and structural assembly.

• Perform material take-offs to determine required materials and components for each job.

• Utilize machinery and tools such as band saws and structural steel equipment to support fabrication activities, where qualified.

• Safely operate forklifts and overhead cranes to move materials, components, and finished assemblies, where qualified.

• Work from and contribute to accurate documentation, including drawings, schematics, and work orders.

• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area in an industrial, non-climate-controlled environment.

• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production schedules and quality standards.

• Adapt to rotating shifts between day and night schedules as required by production needs.

Essential Skills

• Minimum 5 years of vessel fitting experience.

• Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, drawings, and schematics.

• Ability to lay out, fit up, and weld using flux core welding processes, primarily structural and tack welds.

• Experience fitting pressure vessels, including orientation and degree determination.

• Ability to perform own layouts and fit-ups without constant supervision.

• Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately.

• Proficiency operating a cutting torch for material preparation.

• Ability to perform material take-offs to identify required materials and components.

• Capability to work safely and effectively in an industrial, non-climate-controlled environment.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and structural integrity.

• Reliability in following shift schedules, including rotating between day and night shifts as required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• 10 years or more of vessel fitting experience.

• Advanced proficiency with blueprints and drawings, including complex assemblies.

• Extensive experience fitting pressure vessels and related components.

• Experience operating a variety of fabrication and machining equipment.

• Experience utilizing a Peddimaster or Peddinghaus machine on structural steel components.

• Background in building or fitting storage tanks or water towers.

• Forklift operating experience.

• Overhead crane operating experience.

• Band saw operation experience.

• Demonstrated growth mindset, with a willingness to learn new equipment, processes, and techniques.

Work Environment

The work environment is industrial and non-climate-controlled, with conditions typical of a heavy fabrication and structural steel facility. You will work around large vessels, structural components, and industrial machinery such as cutting torches, band saws, forklifts, overhead cranes, and specialized structural steel equipment. The position follows a rotating shift schedule: an initial period on day shift, generally 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with Saturdays as needed; followed by a period on night shift, generally 4:15 p.m. to 2:45 a.m., Monday through Friday, with a shift differential provided during night rotations. The environment requires appropriate industrial work attire and adherence to all safety practices, including the use of personal protective equipment, safe operation of tools and machinery, and maintaining an orderly work area.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $27.50 - $31.50/hr.
