Manager Outpatient Pharmacy

Position Summary Under the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy Services manages the Outpatient Pharmacy; supervises staff pharmacists and technicians; develops and maintains employee schedules, assists the Director in providing Administrative support for the Department; and functions as a staff pharmacist when necessary. Job Responsibilities Demonstrates competency in the delivery of pharmaceutical care services for patients of all ages: Processes Physician orders and serves as the final check for: Appropriate dose based in patient age, weight, medical condition, etc. Drug interactions Drug allergies Side effects 6.2 Counsels patients on proper use, proper storage and side effects of medications as needed 6.3 Utilizes current pharmacy manuals and/or computerized systems in the performance of duties 6.4 Compounds various pharmaceutical preparations requiring professional judgment 6.5 Performs a variety of functions in the unit dose area including: 6.5.1 Confirms orders that have been entered into the computer by technicians 6.5.2 Maintains current medication data in the computerized patient profile 6.5.3 Maintains current patient information in the computerized patient profile (e.g., updates, allergies, Height, weight, etc. as needed) 6.5.4 Checks that packaging meets established standards 6.5.5 Checks and maintains controlled substance records according to state and federal law 6.6 Communication 6.6.1 Notifies physician of any irregularities involving drug therapy and resolves the situation promptly. Notifies appropriate nursing or ancillary personnel about the situation. Notifies Clinical Pharmacist or Director of Pharmacy, if appropriate 6.6.2 Acts in an advisory capacity to provide information on pharmaceutical/pharmacotherapy to nursing staff as well as physicians, dentists, and other qualified prescribers personally or by telephone contact 6.6.3 Contact physicians for clarification or orders and non-formulary substitution recommendations. Advises nursing personnel concerning clarifications and prescription alterations, and writes such clarifications/alterations on patient's medical chart as po (phone order) with physician's name and signature of RPh 6.6.4 Represents the Pharmacy Department on various committees that coordinate efforts to provide improved patient care 6.6.5 Requires frequent contacts with many persons at different levels inside the hospital to carry out hospital policies and procedures and obtain willing acceptance, consent, or action 6.7 Leadership/Training 6.7.1 Assists in orientation of new pharmacy personnel 6.7.2 Provides input into the development of policies and procedures for the department 6.7.3 Develops and review job descriptions for the Retail Pharmacy Department personnel 6.7.4 Provides, requires, and documents the participation of pharmacy personnel in continuing education programs 6.7.5 Works closely with Director to maintain a cohesive work environment in the Pharmacy Dept 6.8 Records Keeping/Quality Management 6.8.1 Ensures that all professional activities within the pharmacy comply with the administrative and Departmental policies and procedures and with standards promulgated by pertinent regulatory and accrediting agencies 6.8.2 Dispenses, provides information, and keeps records for investigational drugs 6.8.3 Participates in hospital and departmental Performance Improvement monitors 6.8.4 Develops and submits quarterly and annual quality planning documentation 6.9 Supervision/Training 6.9.1 Provides direct supervision for all retail staff 6.9.1.1 Ensures completion of 340B education for all retail pharmacy staff 6.9.1.2 Prepares the schedule and adjusts staff levels to provide efficient utilization of personnel and resources 6.9.1.3 Evaluates the performance of pharmacists 6.9.1.4 Disciplines (when necessary) subordinate personnel 6.9.1.5 Assists Director in interviewing and selecting new employees 6.9.1.6 Provides for orientation and training of personnel, including student externs 6.9.1.7 Assists Director in providing administrative support and direction for the department, and substitutes for the Director during his/her absence when requested Education/Experience Must hold a current and valid registration as a Pharmacist in the State of Indiana (or eligibility for reciprocity), having attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE accredited school. Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year of general Pharmacy experience as a registered Pharmacist. Retail pharmacy experience preferred.
