Students in the MFT Program graduate with a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology with a specialization in Marriage and Family Therapy. Graduates are eligible to gain hours for licensure through the Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) for the MFT and have the option of gaining eligibility for the License in Professional Clinical Counseling. We encourage outstanding and qualified candidates to apply as soon as possible. Below is a description of the course that need staffing.Mission Statement: The Masters in Counseling Psychology Program with a concentration in Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) at the University of San Francisco prepares students to be socially and culturally responsive relationship and family therapists and mental health counselors. At its core, the MFT's clinical training program upholds values of equity, social justice, community and cultural wealth, and collaborative problem solving. We are committed to embracing diversity, academic excellence, and to the compassionate service of children, adults, and families.Full Job Description:CPSY 631 - Theories of Counseling and PsychotherapyCourse Description: This course provides an overview of the basicconcepts, history, process of psychotherapy, mechanisms of change, andapplications of the major schools of counseling and psychotherapy,including behavioral, psychodynamic, and humanistic. This course uses amulticultural lens to examine each school of thought or theory. That is,each school of thought or theory is evaluated based on its culture-boundfactors and applicability to diverse populations. Finally, this course willthoroughly examine current trends and pressing questions in the practice ofcounseling with attention to interviewing skills.CPSY 634 - Ethical, Legal and Professional IssuesCourse Description: This course features the roles and responsibilities ofMarriage and Family Therapists according to the laws and ethical principlesgoverning practice. Particular emphasis will be given to the ethics codes ofmajor professional associations, family law and statutes covering mentalhealth practice for MFTs in California, and legal mandates pertaining tochildren in schools.CPSY 637 - Traineeship ICourse Description: A Level 1 supervised experience in marriage andfamily therapy in an institutional setting under professional supervision.Course focus will be on case conceptualization of fieldwork experiencesand development of clinical skills, specifically assessment, treatmentplanning and intervention strategies. Case management and clientcentered advocacy strategies, such as accessing community resources willalso be addressed.CPSY 640 - Relationship TherapyCourse Description: The focus of this course is on relationships: the waysin which people develop as relational beings, their approach towardsrelating to others, and the way in which the therapy relationship isnavigated to promote behavioral and intra-psychic change. The course willreview the formation and dynamics of interpersonal relationships in theindividual, family, couples, and other relationships. Developmental,intergenerational, identity and cultural influences on the understandingrelationships dynamics will be examined. In addition, this course willcritically examine the clinical and research literature on relationships andfamily treatment of mental health issues. Major theoretical approachestowards work with families, couples and other relationship constellationswill be reviewed, including: Bowen, strategic, structural, experiential,cognitive-behavioral, psychoanalytic, solution-focused, narrative, emotion-focused, Gottman method, and integrative approaches. These theories willbe examined for their intervention effectiveness with diverse communitiesand relationships.CPSY 647 - Group Work in Clinical SettingsCourse Description: This course provides an overview of the theories andpractice of group counseling and consultation, with an emphasis onevidenced-based group therapy models such as cognitive-behavioral,problem solving, and psychoeducation and their application to a variety ofpopulations. Students will conduct in-class group therapy sessions,participate in or observe mental-health consumer groups, design acommunity workshop or therapeutic group.CPSY 677 - Counseling Across CulturesCourse Description: This course features an understanding of multiculturalissues in counseling with diverse ethnic groups, cultures, and socialclasses in American society. Emphasis is on developing cultural sensitivityto one's own cultural value system and the value and attitudes of diversegroups in cross-cultural counseling settings; increasing awareness of theeffects that culture, race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientationhave on human development and the counseling process; and on learningeffective counseling strategies and generic counseling methods thataccommodate a diversity of cultures.CPSY 690 - Research MethodsCourse Description: An introduction to the process, methods, and researchliterature pertaining to counseling individuals and families. Application ofbasic research concepts through literature critique, literature review, andmini-proposal development. Students will learn to become professionalconsumers of research regarding the relationship between research andtreatment. Basicknowledge of the diagnostic process and criteria associated with diagnosticcategories in the DSM-IV-TR are explored. Students are provided withopportunities to interact with mental health consumers.CPSY 642 - Counseling MethodsCourse Description: This course is designed to provide students with anunderstanding of foundational counseling skills and the opportunity topractice the skills acquired in the course. The focus of the course is on thefoundational microskills (counseling skills) that form the basis of thecounseling process, regardless of theoretical orientation. Student will learnto effectively use the counseling skills to work with diverse clients and willbe required to demonstrate an understanding and proficiency in the use ofthese basic counseling skills.CPSY 643 - Sexuality and Gender Issues in TherapyCourse Description: This course is designed for counseling and mentalhealth service professionals whose work will bring them into contact withclients experiencing problems and concerns with their sexuality andgender. We will examine the social psychological theories and research onhow gender and sexuality shapes self-conceptions and social interactionsacross many domains. The course is designed to develop: students'knowledge base related to human sexuality and gender experiences, anunderstanding of the varied sexuality and gender-related issues which maybe encountered in therapy practice, students' skills in assessment andintervention skills with regard to sexuality and gender-related experiences,and increased awareness of one's personal perceptions, attitudes in regardto sexuality and gender. Course participants will become more effective inidentifying, assessing and intervening with issues related to sexuality andgender. Throughout the course, we will critically analyze the role of powerand privilege in human sexuality and gender with an inclusive lens thatrecognizes the diversity in sexual and gender identities.CPSY 646 - Community Mental Health: Concepts of Recovery, Wellness,Systems of Care and AdvocacyCourse Description: This course helps students understand the model ofcommunity mental health recover and the skills needed for mental healthpractice. Students will participate in hands-on experiences through acommunity mental health immersion experience, in addition to learningabout strength and evidence based therapeutic interventions aimed atmental health consumers of community mental health care.CPSY 651 - Adult Development and GerontologyCourse Description: This course will provide an overview of the biological,psychological, and social developmental tasks and life events of the adultyears, including a family and vocational perspective. There will be a focuson sociocultural, gender and family issues salient to relationships,separation, nontraditional and blended families, and geropsychology.Issues of aging and long-term care are stressed. Special emphasis will beon assessment of couples, family, and parent-child interactions usingempirically validated models.CPSY 650 - Trauma and Crisis CounselingCourse Description: This course provides opportunities for both theory andskill development by examining crisis and trauma counseling, includingcrisis theory; multidisciplinary responses to crises, emergencies, ordisasters; cognitive, affective, behavioral, and neurological effectsassociated with trauma; brief, intermediate and long-term approaches;assessment strategies for clients in crisis and principles of intervention forindividuals with mental or emotional disorders during times of crisis,emergency, or disaster. Trauma associated with racism, poverty, violence,immigration, refugee status, homelessness, abuse, death, injury, health,and crime (as well as other conditions and issues) may also be explored.Cultural, psychological, social, and biological differences in the experienceof trauma will be addressed and culturally relevant intervention models andstrategies will be discussed.CPSY 654 - Career CounselingCourse Description: Career counseling theory and applications. Focus oncareer planning, interest assessment, employment counseling, vocationalinformation resources, use of technology, current trends and implicationsfor individuals and family development.CPSY 683 - Clinical PsychopharmacologyCourse Description: This course explores basic principles and applicationsof psychopharmacology in the mental health field. Students will surveyprinciples of drug action and neurotransmitter systems in the nervoussystem and various classes of psychiatric drugs. The historical, social,economic, political and cultural influences on the use of psychiatricmedication are also explored.CPSY 687 - Family Systems TherapyCourse Description: The course features the understanding and applicationof evidence based family systems model such as strategic, structural,cognitive and behavioral. Practice includes the integration anddemonstration of skills and techniques from each model.
