Technical Manager (Microbiology) - (7943) Technical Manager (Microbiology) supporting a government customer at Ft. Detrick. This position is contingent upon contract award. The salary range for this exempt position has been established at $85,000 - $95,000. Job Overview The employee will provide technical laboratory support for an ISO 17034 accredited reference materials producer of microbial materials and reagents. Responsibilities include strain accession, production of seed and production material, strain characterization studies, production of assay reagents and controls, inventory management, distribution activities, and additional research activities as needed. Responsibilities Obtain and maintain eligibility for an active SECRET security clearance. Coordinate and oversee technical staff activities supporting accredited laboratory functions; staff assignments and oversight typically occur daily. Provide expert technical guidance and conduct all BRMR procedures in support of the BRMR processes. Workload is 800–1,200 assays per year, 125 SOP reviews per year, maintenance of a microbial culture collection of over 1,200 strains, and distribution of 30–60 samples (potential to surge) to external customers. Assist the BRMR Laboratory Director/PI with process improvement initiatives; consultation typically occurs daily. Present work at scientific meetings approximately 1–2 times per year. Maintain a safe and secure accredited laboratory environment. Travel within the continental US or overseas may be required to support diagnostics or scientific presentations. Safely work in BSL‑2, BSL‑3, and/or BSL‑4 laboratories. Train and competency assess Division personnel on key laboratory practices, procedures, and techniques. Assist in preparation of technical reports, standard operating procedures, and manuscripts related to research efforts. Assist suite supervisor and perform suite supervisor duties for laboratories used by the Division, including instrument and chemical knowledge, supply ordering, preventative maintenance, safety testing, and coordinating personnel. Enroll in BPRP and maintain records in accordance with contract provisions and regulations. Qualifications Active SECRET security clearance required. U.S. citizenship required per contract needs. Experience in ISO‑17034 accredited laboratory operations, strain management, assay production, or related microbiology laboratory work. Strong technical leadership and staff management skills. Knowledge of microbiological safety (BSL‑2/3/4) and regulatory compliance. Proficiency in producing and reviewing SOPs, technical reports, and scientific manuscripts. Ability to travel as required.
