About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Adult Medical Specialty Unit - Medical Surgical Duration: 15 weeks Shift: 12 Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year License: Active Illinois license or confirmation that application process has been initiated Certifications: BLS Must-Have: Experience with central lines, tracheostomies, and chest tubes. Prefer candidates with EPIC experience. Experience in a Level I trauma center will be considered without travel experience if candidate has EPIC experience. Description: The unit has a capacity of 56 beds, including private and semi-private rooms. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-5 from 07:00 to 23:00 and 1:5-6 from 23:00 to 07:30. Common diagnoses include cellulitis, sepsis, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, syncope, anemia, uncontrolled diabetes, acute respiratory failure, liver failure, kidney failure, and behavioral health and addictions. RNs are not required to titrate drips. Common titratable medications include heparin and Lasix. A charge nurse is present on each shift, and the charge nurse does not take an assignment. Patient Care Technicians assist with vital signs, accuchecks, bladder scans, and activities of daily living, with a ratio of 1:8-10. Respiratory therapy equipment used includes BiPAP and CPAP for sleep apnea and inhaler administration and suctioning. Telemetry is monitored remotely, and RNs can view strips on a pack or computer using Phillips monitors. Shifts consist of three 12-hour shifts from 19:00 to 07:30. There is a weekend requirement of every other weekend for days and alternating Friday/Saturday for nights. Holiday requirements vary. There is no call or standby requirement. Floating may occur to other acute care general medicine areas as needed. Professional scrubs of any color are allowed, with no visible tattoos or piercings except for ears. Unit-specific orientation lasts for 2-3 shifts. Charting is completed using EPIC. A BSN is not required. Care setting is acute care. Trauma level is 1.
