Vice President of Development

NextUp RVA (NextUp) is a nonprofit organization powered by a network of providers and leaders with a shared commitment to ensuring youth have access to quality learning opportunities beyond the classroom. We are dedicated to making Out-of-School Time (OST) and expanded-learning programs more accessible for youth, especially teenage youth. We do this by coordinating efforts and resources, knitting programs together into a cohesive system, helping individual programs function at a high level, and pushing the system to provide the greatest benefit to as many young people as possible. Position Summary The Vice President of Development (VP) is responsible for overseeing and managing the organization’s fundraising strategy, development, and execution. As a strong leader, this individual must be passionate about the organization's mission and vision, embody its core values, and clearly communicate the mission to donors and prospects in a way that educates and motivates them to give. The ideal candidate will have experience meeting and exceeding seven-figure annual fundraising goals through various fundraising channels. The VP of Development is a member of NextUp's leadership team who reports directly to the President and CEO (CEO). They play an active role in making strategic decisions that impact the organization. Working closely with the CEO, the VP is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will be responsible for building new relationships that increase the organization's visibility, impact, and financial resources. Additionally, the VP will create and implement a comprehensive plan that cultivates support from the public and private sectors, leading to key external alliances. The VP will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $4million budget through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. The successful candidate will expand and diversify NextUp’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the board of directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role. It is expected that the amount raised by NextUp will increase in future years as the VP systematically and effectively strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity. Key Responsibilities: Works closely with senior leadership team and board of directors to develop strategies in fundraising channels as well as actively participate in the strategic planning process and critical strategic decisions for the organization. Develops and implements a robust fundraising plan for categories such as major gifts, government grants, events, etc. to achieve short‑term and long‑term goals. Develops annual fundraising budgets. Identifies, cultivates, solicits, and expands the number of individual annual, mid‑level, and major prospects and donors. Analyzes and reports on the overall performance of fundraising against goals and strategic plan. Stays apprised of advancements and changes in the fundraising and development profession. Directs and leads adaptations to current strategies and practices in accordance with these changes and as necessary. Provides vision and direction to build and manage a full‑scale development program. Manage a portfolio of 75+ prospects and move them through the donor pipeline through the moves management process. Focus on individual and corporate donors of $5,000+. Create unique major donor cultivation opportunities that will build the NextUp pipeline of major donors and volunteer leadership. Serve as liaison for board member and development committee member individual development plans: meet with board members twice a year to discuss prospects and solicitations, follow‑up with board members on fundraising assignments, and work with board members to make new connections for NextUp. Manage the development committee of the board, working closely with the CEO, development and leadership teams. Coordinate moves management of CEO: introduce CEO to new prospects, send reminders to CEO on fundraising assignments, join CEO on donor meetings. Cultivate relationships with major institutional funders and manage stewardship of these relationships to secure increased investment from corporate and private foundations. Draft gift proposals and presentations for individual major donors, businesses, and small, private foundations. Work closely with the Communications Manager to ensure NextUp communications have current and relevant information for donors and stakeholders. Events Plan and execute major donor cultivation events that will introduce new donors to NextUp. Create annual donor recognition event and oversee planning, execution, and follow‑up. Oversee the planning and execution of school site tours and bring donors and prospects to tours. Branding and Marketing Build upon a branding strategy that supports all fundraising and program efforts. Understands, communicates and enforces the organization’s values, policies, guidelines and practices. Maintains and updates organizational brand standards and communicates and enforces execution of the brand. Partners with public relations efforts to ensure brand representation and adherence across in‑house advertising, graphic design, social media, direct mail, website and in communications such as the annual report and other mediums. Work closely with Senior Manager of Communications and Community Engagement to elevate and increase awareness of OST and youth development as a city and region‑wide priority. Internal Management Oversee the development department, manage the team including the Development and Grants Manager: approve drafts of acknowledgement letters, annual fund appeal letters, and other donor communications; manage project and event timelines; ensure grant tracking and report deadlines are met; set weekly check‑ins to ensure development operations are running smoothly. Together with the EVP Of System Data and Analytics, manage and support the Senior Manager of Communications and Community Engagement. (Dotted line report) Oversee contract grant writer and work closely with that position to create an annual grant calendar and strategy around grant requests. Participate in monthly reconciliation process to ensure gift tracking is accurate. Ensure management of donors is kept up to date in development database. Required Qualifications: Education: bachelor’s degree and/or an ongoing demonstrated dedication to professional development, CFRE preferred Development/Fundraising: Minimum 10 years successful experience and proven and verified record of soliciting and closing major gifts from individuals and corporations. Fundraising experience in Education/Youth development background a plus. Adheres to the highest ethical standards in fundraising. Project leadership: Experience in planning, leading and managing development projects, including coordinating with peers to achieve desired outcomes, attention to detail, and tracking and reporting on progress to the CEO and board of directors and in the development database. Entrepreneurial spirit: Takes initiative, ability to manage multiple activities and deadlines while maintaining a focus on quality, and actively seeks to deepen current donor relationships and to forge new ones. Communications: Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising, strong writing skills, with the ability to produce and edit work appropriate for external audiences with little oversight. Passion for youth issues and out-of-school time and/or education: Believes in the value of every child and the importance of community collaboration to help youth thrive. Influencing : Influences others to accept ideas by using convincing arguments, creates a win‑win situation and responds appropriately to key stakeholders. Technology: Strong computer literacy in Microsoft Office required (specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and development software. $110,000 – $120,000 / year This position is eligible for benefits and participation in the 403(b) plan.
