Licensed Veterinary Technician - Oncology

BluePearl Pet Hospital is seeking a compassionate and skilled Oncology Veterinary Technician to join our Midtown, NY team! Pay $30.00 - $51.00 / hour. This pay band is dependent on experience and advancement through our competency assessment tool. Candidates with VTS credentialing are eligible for compensation commensurate with experience. Shift Differentials We offer competitive shift differential pay for eligible hours worked during nights and weekends. Shift differentials are based on a 4‑hour minimum. For example: Mon - Fri: 6pm to 8am = +$4.50/hr Sat & Sun: 8am to 6pm = +$4.50/hr Sat & Sun: 6pm to 8am = +$8.00/hr Job Overview A BluePearl Oncology Technician is self‑motivated, a quick thinker, and able to multi‑task efficiently. Good communication skills and compassion are a must. Prefer a minimum of two or more years’ experience in a specialty veterinary hospital. The right candidate will treat and monitor patients as well as support the clinician with patient care and client communication. Responsibilities Perform physical exam; accurately count heart, pulse rate, capillary refill time, mucous membranes, temperature, respiratory rate and effort. Understand normal vital and lab parameters and alert doctor when abnormal. Perform phlebotomy. Place peripheral intravenous catheter in cephalic vein. Calculate basic medical math. Set up appropriate materials for chemotherapy administration. Safely dispense and administer oral chemotherapy agents. Safely dispense, reconstitute and administer SC/IM chemotherapy agents. Check chemotherapy agent calculations and dosages. Properly shave and wrap for an IV catheter for chemotherapy infusion. Have the knowledge of chemotherapy extravasation and what to do if it happens. Admit Oncology patients and obtain thorough history including current medications and dosages, response to treatment and side effects, intensity and duration. Discharge Oncology patients from the hospital, including basic client education such as how to handle patient eliminations after chemotherapy, how to handle oral chemotherapy at home, chemotherapy and radiation side effects and oral medication administration. Maintain solid grasp of common veterinary medical terms and abbreviations and be able to converse with other veterinary professionals in medical terms. Address client concerns and answer them appropriately during visits, updates, or after hospitalization. Quickly and competently facilitate incoming calls. Have the knowledge of tumor types. Understand diagnostic work‑up protocols (including oncology specific terminology for each tumor/cancer type per each hospital's protocol). Possess a working knowledge of anesthesia/monitoring equipment and assist with patients assigned ASA I or II classifications. Remain current on R.E.C.O.V.E.R CPR guidelines and demonstrate proficiency in designated role as assigned by attending clinician and/or supervisor.
