Official TSU Title Drug & Alcohol Counselor Grant Title N/A Job Description Summary / TWC Summary The Drug and Alcohol Counselor provide prevention, education,intervention, assessment, counseling, and referral services toTexas Southern University students experiencing substance useconcerns. This position supports the university’s commitment tostudent wellness, academic success, retention, and personaldevelopment by promoting healthy decision-making and reducing theimpact of alcohol and drug misuse on the campus community. The counselor collaborates with campus departments, studentorganizations, residence life staff, faculty, and communitypartners to provide comprehensive substance abuse prevention andintervention services while ensuring compliance with federal,state, and university regulations. Essential Duties Summary Conduct substance uses assessments, screenings, and evaluationsfor students referred to through self-referral, faculty, staff,residence life, campus police, or the student conduct process. Develop individualized treatment, intervention, and recoverysupport plans. Provide short-term individual counseling focused on substanceuse, recovery, relapse prevention, and wellness. Facilitate educational workshops, prevention programs, andawareness campaigns related to alcohol, tobacco, cannabis,prescription drug misuse, and other substances. Conduct group counseling and support groups for students inrecovery or seeking behavioral change. Collaborate with Residence Life, Student Conduct, CampusPolice, Athletics, Student Organizations, and Student Affairs tosupport student wellness initiatives. Coordinate referrals to community treatment providers,rehabilitation programs, medical professionals, and mental healthspecialists when necessary. Maintain confidential clinical records and documentation inaccordance with HIPAA, FERPA, ethical standards, and universitypolicies. Assist in crisis intervention and behavioral health responseefforts involving substance-related concerns. Develop and implement campus-wide prevention initiatives duringNational Recovery Month, Alcohol Awareness Month, and other healthpromotion campaigns. Monitor trends in student substance use and recommendstrategies to improve prevention and intervention efforts. Participating in university committees focused on studenthealth, wellness, retention, and risk management. Provide consultation and training to faculty, staff, studentleaders, and residence life personnel regarding substance abuseprevention and intervention. FTE 1.0 Hiring Range $55,038.89 - $70,174.59 Education Master’s degree in counseling, Social Work, Psychology, Marriageand Family Therapy, Public Health, or a related field from anaccredited institution. Required Licensing/Certification Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor ( LCDC ) in the State of Texas, or eligibility to obtain licensure within six months ofhire. Licensed Professional Counselor ( LPC ), Licensed ClinicalSocial Worker ( LCSW ), or related clinical credentialpreferred. Valid Texas Driver’s License preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of: Federal, State, Local and County laws. Policies, procedures, and practices. Requires full/complete knowledge in multiple disciplines andserves as an ultimate subject matter expert in at least onediscipline or function. Demonstrates full command of technical andfunctional principles, procedures, and subject matter in multipledisciplines to handle any situation and lead or train others.Requires the ability to lead the development or modification ofwork procedures across multiple disciplines. Experience working with college-aged populations ispreferred. Ability to maintain the security or integrity of criticalinfrastructure, which may include communications systems, computernetworks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid,hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.
