Assistant Residence Hall Director - Residential Life Established in 1844 and designated a University Center of the State University of New York in 1962, the University at Albany’s broad mission of excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, research, and public service engages a diverse student body of approximately 17,000 students in nine schools and colleges across three campuses. Located in Albany, New York, New York State’s capital, the University is convenient to Boston, New York City, and the Adirondacks. Job Description The Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARD) is responsible for assisting in the operations of a residential quad consisting of approximately 1,200 residents. The ARD actively supports the Department’s mission by making the quad an inviting, intellectual, and inclusive community. The ARD supports all facets of the quad’s housing, including community development programming, staff development, administrative responsibilities, adjudicating violations of the Community Rights and Responsibilities, and providing front‑end office support. The ARD supervises work‑study students and serves in a weekly on‑duty rotation as well as the departmental recess duty rotation. This is a live‑in position and the incumbent must reside in their assigned on‑campus apartment designated by the Department of Residential Life. This is a ten‑month college year position and obligation dates are provided to staff based on the academic calendar. Primary Responsibilities Support the Quad Information Center front‑end operations within the Residential Community. Serve on call and on duty on a weekly basis to respond to all emergencies, mental health incidents, and enforce University policies. Live‑in professional staff is responsible for all emergencies. Support staff development, programming, and administrative functions of the quad or residential community. Student conduct adjudication. Support key departmental functions including opening, closing, staff hiring and training, housing selection, and attending designated quad or departmental events. Lead and manage direct reports or team, providing guidance, support, and performance feedback to assure goals, programs, activities, and personnel practices are consistent with and contribute to the University’s mission. Lead employees for maximum performance and dedication, fostering a positive and productive work environment. Complete performance management feedback and goals timely and per requirements, offering constructive feedback and developing improvement plans. Attend quad, residential community, department, divisional, and/or university meetings, events, and trainings. Attend and represent Residential Life at enrollment‑focused events, which may occur on nights and weekends. Other reasonable duties as assigned. Functional and Supervisory Relationships Reports to Assistant Director of Residential Community. Supervises the following positions: Work Study and Student Assistant staff. May supervise other student employees as assigned. Job Requirements Ability to live in the provided on‑campus apartment for the duration of employment. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization. Valid Driver’s License. Preferred Qualifications Experience working in college or university residential life. The working environment is a blend of a typical office environment, residence halls, residential or program spaces, and outdoor campus locations. Incident response may include policy violations, mental health, facilities emergencies, or other time‑sensitive matters that impact the physical demand, mental demands, or working environment. The working environment for this role is dynamic and fast‑paced, requiring a blend of office‑based tasks, residence hall response, team collaboration, and occasional campus‑wide engagement. The work setting includes both administrative office spaces, residential or program locations for training, staff supervision, and event execution. Given the nature of Residential Life, there is often a need for flexibility and adaptability, as responsibilities shift throughout the academic year, with peak periods during residence hall openings and closings, specialty area key time periods, duty, key administrative operations, and during unexpected emergency response. Working evenings and weekends is part of the working environment as a live‑in professional. Physically, the role may involve occasional standing or walking for events, meetings, and campus programs, with periods of office‑based tasks that require extended sitting and computer use. The physical demands are moderate and include moving between various office spaces, residential areas, and campus event venues. At times, it is necessary to carry items to set up events/operations, pack and move students’ belongings, or on an as‑needed basis. This also includes regularly walking and using stairs to conduct rounds of residence halls and respond to incidents indoors and outdoors. Mental demands are dynamic and fast‑paced, demanding, and require multitasking, problem‑solving, and strategic decision‑making. The role also involves significant interpersonal interaction, including training, supervising staff, difficult conversations, customer service, and policy enforcement. It also requires problem‑solving and decision‑making during emergency response to incidents, demanding strong communication, emotional intelligence, and conflict‑resolution skills. The ability to work under pressure, handle emergencies, and respond to unforeseen challenges is essential.
