Vice President, Cruelty Recovery Center

Summary The Vice President of the Cruelty Recovery Center (VP) leads the sheltering component of the ASPCA’s national response to animal cruelty and natural disasters. Based at the CRC in Columbus, Ohio, the VP oversees a highly skilled team that provides lifesaving care for animals rescued from large‑scale cruelty cases and emergency situations. Who We Are For more than 150 years, the ASPCA has been on the frontlines to save, transform and protect the lives of millions of animals. The CRC sits at the heart of the organization’s mission, delivering integrated, quality care from intake through outcomes at the CRC facility and temporary field shelters. What You’ll Do The VP oversees the CRC’s Columbus‑based shelter, ensuring consistent, efficient, and forward‑thinking operations. Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Shelter and Rehabilitation Operations, the VP leads teams to deliver fully integrated medical, behavioral and operational care, while ensuring pathway planning balances excellent care with readiness for critical requests. The role also strengthens local engagement, builds community relationships, and drives the CRC’s presence in the field. When & Where You’ll Work This on‑site position is based at the ASPCA’s Cruelty Recovery Center in Columbus, OH. The regular schedule is Monday‑through‑Friday with required flexibility for early mornings, evenings, weekends and travel up to 15% annually. Compensation Starting pay is $160,000 – $175,000 annually, depending on education, training, experience, location and internal equity. The target range is for new hire offers only; compensation may increase beyond the maximum based on performance over time. Responsibility Buckets Leadership and Planning Lead the department toward consistency across teams; communicate objectives, expectations and accountabilities. Proactively resolve operational challenges, improve efficiency and quality of animal care, and maintain compliance with applicable laws and shelter standards. Collaborate with veterinary and animal behavior functions; guide leadership teams in monitoring key indicators, inform decision‑making and drive training plans. Expand community engagement to increase adoptions, foster homes and volunteer participation. People Management and Staff Development Manage a staff of approximately 50 employees, setting clear expectations, providing development opportunities and building positive relationships. Oversee contingent workforce management for CRC and temporary field shelters. Conduct regular performance conversations and evaluations, maintain a respectful and inclusive culture, and support the matrixed structure. Mentor teams on leadership, communication, customer service and ASPCA policies. Operational Excellence Oversee day‑to‑day program operations and leadership of CRC. Align departmental policies with ASPCA shelters, guide complex decision‑making, manage budgets, and monitor progress toward key results. Collaborate with infrastructure teams (Media & Communications, Development, People, Legal, Real Estate & Facilities, Finance, IT) to support best practices. Provide staffing for national field response, temporary shelter set‑up and de‑mobilization, as well as forensic and behavioral science teams. Collect and analyze data, communicate persuasively to stakeholders, model work/life balance, testify in criminal cases, and support the ASPCA’s Learning Lab. Qualifications Solid understanding of people management, change leadership, program development, process improvement and budget oversight. Highly motivated self‑starter with strategic thought leadership and ability to lead projects with limited guidance. Strong track record of leading through change and mediating conflict. Excellent supervisory, coaching and conflict resolution skills. Experience representing an organization through public speaking at conferences and external forums. Strong analytical skills; fluent with data, key metrics and persuasive stakeholder communication. Critical thinker, problem solver with ability to juggle multiple priorities and adapt under pressure. Track record of managing large, complex projects on time. Strong integrity and discretion for handling sensitive information. Knowledge of animal shelters, sheltering challenges and animal welfare trends. Fluent in Excel, PowerPoint and Canva; able to create presentations and visuals. Ability to exemplify ASPCA core values and behavioral competencies. Comfort working with behaviorally and medically compromised animals, including regular humane euthanasia. Language: English (Required). Education and Work Experience High School Diploma, GED or equivalent (required). Minimum 5 years of experience leading a large team and overseeing a multifaceted program. Minimum 5 years of experience managing a substantial, complex budget. Experience in an animal shelter supporting operations and administrative responsibilities preferred. Project management experience preferred. CAWA designation is a plus. Experience in disaster response or temporary field shelters is a plus. Experience with victims of animal cruelty (e.g., fighting, hoarding) is a plus.
