Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner

Under general supervision performs sexual assault examinations and works at the Carson City Health and Human Services. Salary: This position will be paid $600.00 per examination, $300 for a re-exam. • Administer the comprehensive sexual assault examinations including, but not limited to, timely response to requests to provide the examination, obtaining forensic evidence, evaluating patients for the possibility of sexually transmitted infections, providing treatment and/or prophylactic treatment of sexually transmitted infections, assessment of pregnancy risk and discussion of treatment options with the patient.
• Perform timely and accurate collection of forensic evidence and maintain and document chain of custody evidence.
• Provides deposition and court testimony regarding sexual assault examinations.
• Assists the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Medical Director in the establishment of policies, procedures, and personnel competencies as they relate to sexual assault exams within the SART program and collaborates with the SART Medical Director in developing protocols and standing orders.
• Collaborates with the SART Medical Director, law enforcement, prosecutors and victim advocates to provide complete care for patients and to ensure and maintain chain of evidence.
• Consults with the SART team members and participates in program meetings.
• Participates in case reviews, quality review and continuous quality improvement activities as they pertain to sexual assault examinations and provisions of services to victims of sexual assault.
• Complies with all Health Insurance Portability Authorization Act (HIPAA) requirements, Federal, State and local laws regarding confidentiality of personal health information and City policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
• Advise patients on available and appropriate medical and social services available.
• Keep accurate patient records; maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the areas of sexual assault.
• Compile and submit necessary medical/statistical reports and data in a timely fashion.
• Apply basic time management and patient care coordination skills to effectively provide nursing and health care services.
• Contributes to the overall quality of the department's service provision by developing and coordinating work teams and by reviewing, recommending and implementing improved policies and procedures.
• Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
• Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with patients, family members, visitors, and staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment.
• Complies with all Nevada State Board of Nursing's scope of practice for sexual assault nurse examiners.

Typical Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience: Nevada State Registered Nurses License

• Valid Driver's License.
• Nevada State Registered Nursing License.
• Successful completion of an IAFN-approved course of study, including clinical hours required by the program (Nevada State Board of Nursing), provide for proficiency maintenance "as required by the current standards of nursing practice, to be verified in circumstances of gaining/maintaining employment as a forensic nurse or upon request by the NSBN pursuant to NAC 632.071, 224, and 225 (Nevada State Board of Nursing)
• Must complete four (4) continuing education units in forensics annually.

Required Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of: Management of sexual assault patients, the sexual assault examination and the collection of forensic evidence. Management skills to analyze programs, policies and operational needs. Principles and practices of program development and administration. Recent developments, current literature and sources of information related to sexual assault examinations. Public relations principles and techniques. Office procedures, methods and computer equipment, including common office software such as word processing, spreadsheet and email. Techniques for understanding and effectively communicating with individuals of various cultures.

Skills in: Planning, organizing, reviewing and evaluating the work of SANE nurses. Working collaboratively and effectively with SANE nurses, victim advocates, Federal, State and local law enforcement agencies, attorneys and the Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation. Working independently with good organizational skills and ability to communicate effectively. Planning, managing and evaluating program goals and objectives and service delivery effectiveness. Identifying programmatic and operational problems, investigating and evaluating alternatives and implementing effective solutions. Interpreting, applying and explaining applicable laws, codes and regulations. Preparing clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written materials. Using initiative and independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Contributing effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives and activities. Dealing successfully with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Making public presentations to large and small groups. Supervision Received and Exercised: Under General Supervision - Incumbents at this level are given assignments and objectives that are governed by specifically outlined work methods and a sequence of steps, which are explained in general terms. The responsibility for achieving the work objectives, however, rests with a superior. Immediate supervision is not consistent, but checks are integrated into work processes and/or reviews are frequent enough to ensure compliance with instructions.

Conditions of Employment: 1. This classification is considered Unclassified- employees are "at will" and as such, may be terminated at any time for any reason, or no reason. 2. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation. 3. Employees may be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment. 5.
